Hi Pete,
re: http://www.petegmagic.com/newsletters/feb09.html One thing that caught my eye was your Magic Touch Newsletter (online). Part way through, all of the text becomes underlined for the rest of the page (Masters of Illusion onwards). It's like it doesn't recognize when to stop underlining certain words / titles. I'm viewing it in IE. All of the underlining makes it hard to read. Also, on many websites, underlined words indicate that it's an active link (and your text isn't an active link). So, you want to use underlines sparingly. - Donald

Donald,
Thank you for the quick response. I talked ot the wbe designer about IE. He checked his source code in Dreamweaver and told me that the settings show that it is fine. I will mention it again! |

Hi Pete -
Out of curiousity, I looked at it in Firefox also. The extra underlines aren't there in FF. They're just there in IE. Of course, certain paragraphs are bolded, when viewing in both browsers. I imagine you did that on purpose. - Donald

Donald,
Yes I was trying to make some text as bold and some not, so that there is some variety and the eye doesn't get lazy. |

Another way to achieve the same results is to bold or italicize certain words (especially key words / phrases you want to punch), as opposed to a whole paragraph.
Just a tip I learned along the way, and that I impliment a lot. - Donald

Visually, I like it a lot! Functionally- some suggestions:
Not sure how you have your text size expressed in the style sheet. Might want to do it in Ems if it is not. On my screen the small type against the dark blue was hard to read. Landing Pages are not favored by many search engines and might make it harder for people to find you. You need to add information to your header- key words (not used by some search engines but still good to have) Meta description IS still used by most. It is also what will appear in the blurb under your name if someone runs a search. I would add 3 paragraphs of plain text under the landing page graphic. The 3 paragraphs should: Be 5-10 sentances each, Contain the key words you want to optimize for 3 -5 times per paragraph in different, discreet normal English sentances, be in a normal readable color against the background. You can place them down "under the fold" and most people will never see them, but the point is that the SEARCH engines will. With the java Disabled, the site still looks good. Be aware, with the heavy reliance on java script, many folks will get warnings depending on their browser and security settings. Graphically, content-wise and visually I really like the site! These are things that will help the site function better as a sales tool.
Leaping Lizards!!! Who knew it was possible.

Thank you much. I know we have been going back and forth on the java stuff. My web designer says he has it optimized and that meta tags are not as efficient as they used to be. I will forward the information to him.
All of this info is great. Thanks again! |

Few things -
Your promo photo : You're drawing the Ace on your Cardiographic incorrectly, the card that rises should look like it's coming out of the deck, yours looks like it's coming from a slit in the paper. - How did you get to be San Jose's "official magician"? That sounds like hype to me. If it's legit then have something to back it up and promote it more. - The newspaper article says you don't pull a rabbit out of a hat and you're a modern magician. This seems to be the angle you're going for, yet your logo has a rabbit coming out of a hat. Pick one or the other. |

I suspect that what you want is business from your page. If this is the case then there is a lot more you can do. Studies have shown that you only have a short time to get someone's attention. What do I learn from the first few seconds?
I see that you are probably a magician, but I don't know that for sure. I don't know what kind of magic you do, whether you are available for parties, or any type of gigs. Are you selling magic tricks? What part of the world are you from? As far as search engines go, you have basically no content (I didn't check keywords or meta tags). Graphics aren't searchable (at least not yet). Some say that meta tags and keywords aren't as good as actual content. You need to say clearly who you are, what you do, and where you are located and why you are the right person for whatever market you are looking at. Dump the welcome to my new website bit. No one cares, they came to your website for either information or for entertainment. Notices about the sight don't further either, unless they are amusing. Best of luck.

I agree a lot with Marty.
Depending on what target market your selling too - your site looks more like an artist or personal page. If a corporate client came onto your page, you have to ask yourself. Would they book me. Something I made the mistake of, is that your site needs to be really simple. People don't want to think where things are. When they get frustrated, they leave your page. Have a look at mine, http://www.jayjayentertainment.com. I always would like to tweak a few things, but generally happy. It does the job. jay jay.
