Title: Joshua Jay Methods In Magic UK Lectures
Medium: DVD Arena: Method, close up Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies I like Josh Jay, have since he was a kid. I really believe that he will stand alongside men such as Dai Vernon, Marlo, and Larry Jennings some day. He gets it. He understands magic and really appreciates it and I can’t tell you how much I respect that position. With Methods in Magic, the UK lectures, Josh continues bringing the magic community his thoughts and ideas. Basically what you have with Methods in Magic is footage of Josh lecturing at various locations in the UK then he goes into detail in a studio setting where he can focus without the distraction of the audience. Also inserted are specific questions and answers along with bits intended for entertainment purposes. It was all done really well and in an entertaining fashion which kept me watching for the two plus hours of video. The quality is very good, they used excellent cameras and the sound was surprisingly good throughout. It was a bit dark but hey, the youth love darkness. Josh is polished and well thought out as usual. In the lecture Josh goes over a number of effects and ideas but remember that the focus is on method. This means that josh will gloss over certain technical aspects and spend more time going over the how the effect came to be and the intricate details in the presentation. I hope this makes sense. Basically you will have to bring something to the table here. If you are more a ‘show me how to do a trick’ guy and less of a guy wanting to go deeper into a routine this may not be for you. I thought what Josh had to say was right on. An example would be when he mentions his surprise that some magicians are not as ‘into’ magic as he thinks they should be. He is right. The dedicated magician works at his art as often as possible, Hendrix use to carry his guitar to the bathroom with him, Josh carries a deck of card everywhere with him. I do to. This DVD, I think, is very motivational to the magician who wants to take it up a notch. The magic shown can be found on the ad but I want to mention a few pieces. There is one called Heightened Senses which is a prediction of an individual’s height in inches. Josh goes over how he developed the effect and it is a good example of how an end was thought of and the means was brought about in the best manner. Vegas Visit is a very entertaining routine using the six card repeat. I’ve not seen this before and you need to purchase special cards but it is worth it. His three coin vanish is also excellent and makes use of gaffs but in a way that you are not stuck with people asking to ‘check out’ the coins at the end. There are a couple Triumph routines that include some moves that are excellent and many will want to consider adding to their present routines. Josh teaches, again, his any card at any number routine and it is a real winner. The discussions are worth giving attention too throughout. I thought this was a winner. I do think that Josh should have spent a bit more time on the ‘how to’ parts of the lecture rather than thinking everyone already knows how to do it. I understand that wasn’t the goal of the DVD but there are lots of guys out there that have never done a six card repeat or Triumph. Those with some experience shouldn’t have a problem but others might. Hey, I’ve never done the 21 Card Trick, I’ve no clue how it is done as I’ve never even seen it and everyone seems to think all magicians know it. Other than that complaint on my part I was impressed with this DVD and, as always, was impressed with Joshua Jay. This is well worth your consideration, I’m going to watch it again right now. |
