Does anybody else like Leaving Home by Jay Sankey? I learned it off The Very Best of Series and now most always wear a key around my neck. I think its a great effect but I have seen a lot of negative reviews. Is it because of the amount of practice involved?

I don't know the illusion, but have thought about getting/learning it. Saw a demo of it and it looks awsome. I'd like to hear why you like it. I've heard it takes a lot of practice - how much has it taken you? Does it make use of special gimmicks or if I get the video can I use my own props?

You can get the props yourself. I learned it from Sankeytized vol 1 and it's a very cool effect. I love the use of the Strike Vanish.

Hmmm....strange that you've seen negative reviews of this. I'm learning it from the same place you did. The first time I saw the performance I was shocked. It is great visual magic!

I have yet to see a negative review on this trick. Leaving Home is a beatiful piece of magic and extremely practical for restaurant work or walk-around magic. It looks so good and you don't have to bother with all those gimmicks and gaffs. It is really a fun routine for you and the spectators and they really are blown away by it.
If you have seen any negative review it is probably from magicians who cannot do the routine because it is too hard for them. Some magicians give negative reviews to things that didn't fool them or if they cannot do it, but I would pay no attention to those because you have to go with what laymen think. Andrew |

I like the trick now, but when I first got it I was bummed. The key does not quite visually melt off the string before the spectators eyes like it says in the ad. The written instructions were difficult, and after reading them over and over I just couldn't get it. Eventually I found a demo on Penguin Magic which I watched several times till I understood what to do. It isn't that the move is hard, it is mostly just figuring out how it works. Now I take Leaving Home with me everywhere because you can always just carry it around your neck and it is pretty slick visually once you get it.

I saw the demo on Penguin Magic twice, and I knew how it was done. Nevertheless, it's a great effect, and once you now how it works you can use the technique to link other things as well(at least I can...)

I learned this from the Very Best of Sankey and think with practice this will be one of my signature tricks. It definitely is not one you will be performing the day you learn it however!

I cannot reccomend this enough. If you are hesitant of the trick, watch a demo video on http://www.penguinmagic.com and you will see how simple and amazing this is. Lay Audiences FLIP OUT.

Nice demo... sure easy if you already know how to do "the move" at the end.

Would I be somewhat correct in saying it uses a move from Charming Chinese Challange (yes or no please! That is all I need to keep my sanity!)

If you really like this move, then learn A Charming Chinese Challenge by Troy Hooser. The effect is 3 chinese coins penatrate a ribbon, each one more impossible than the last. There's much more to it than that and it is much more involved. I use this trick every night I perform, I definately think it is more practical than using a key and is much more impressive.

I think it is a killer effect - a friend of mine does this in his work place (where ear gaurds are worn around the neck) so he has adapted the effect according to the ear safety devices. I think it is a well worthy piece of magic to have around

Learned this off of Sankitized. I've been very happy with this. Don't see why you'd need to buy the marketed version. The video is just fine.

This effect has been out for a while now, I first learned it from a set of his lecture notes in 99.
