Recently I have been trying to build one solid and strong routine instead of doing every trick I come across. I have been considering basing my routine around my wallet. It would start out with me opening my wallet and taking out either 5 or 6 foreign coins. Than taking out 3 for copper, silver, brass and starting my routine. Afterwards I would go back to my wallet, return the coins, and show them a red backed playing card with a signature on it. Which would set me up for the Darwin Ortiz Dream Card effect. Than I would like to perform the Invisible Deck but I am uncertain of how to make it flow nicely into the routine. Another part I am also wondering about is my closer.Should I do my version of Angle Zero and have the corner of their card appear in a sealed envelope in my wallet or pull some bills out of my wallet and do Extreme Burn. The main problem with using Extreme Burn is that my wallet is a hip pocket Mullica and the bills won't fit without putting a fold in them.
Any book recomendations and advice is truly welcomed. Thanks Ian B |

I think it is good you are working to get a set routine of magic tied into a single performance set instead of just showing them "a trick".
My question is, what is your intention for where you'll be performing this? Will this be an out with friends on the fly performance set? Or a paid gig? Something else? It sounds like you are going for something you can carry around all the time and perform on a whim. If that is the case, you might want to just stick with what can fit in your wallet for one set. You could have a separate set revolving around a deck of cards. Another set with bills. You may not want to have more than three tricks to a set. If you have a lot in one set, it can become too much for just a casual thing. If you want to do a longer performance, then you can do set one, then followed by set two. Like cards with climax ending with envelope in wallet. Now that wallet is out, go on to set two with things in your wallet. But you at least have that option when the time comes. Good luck. |

What I was planning on doing was to some day (likely about 5-6 years from now) go into tablehopping. My mom is a minister and goes to a lot of church dinners, so I think that would be a good place to volenteer hopefully within a few months. I actually ordered Strong Magic by Darwin Ortiz which I have heard is great to help you build a strong routine. I would like to be able to just carry around my wallet and just two decks of cards.
Do you think Angle Zero would be overkill on card tricks? Also is it a really bad idea to show 5 foreign coins and pick the three for copper silver brass? And lastly is the whole idea of having everything work from my wallet a really bad idea? Thanks so much Ian |

First, welcome to the Café, Ian!
Some thoughts, only my own, of course: You are thinking "routine" and that is good. If you can weave a good story line around your magic, it will make the routine easier for you, and more interesting for the specs. For me, the Invisible Deck would not provide enough value to carry around. You can get similar effect with sleights, and in close-up situations people can get grabby. Therefore, I try to stick to non-gaffed effects in those close-up encounters. Packet tricks seem to be very well received, and do not take up much room. In fact, one deck I always have with me looks normal but actual is full of packet tricks ready to use. In this way, I look like I am just taking a few cards out of the deck. Coins are great for table magic- again I use sleights so everything is examinable. I usually have sponge balls in my pocket as they are easy to carry and very visual and, of course, fully examinable. I avoid "card tricks" and try to do "card magic", to my mind different things. Color Monte would be an example of card magic to me. The specs are usually amazed at the ending- out of left field and really magical. Full deck would be the Biddle trick or, of course, a good card to wallet. Lastly, to me Extreme Burn is just too good to leave out. I use it out of a separate pocket and don't try to put it into the wallet. A great ending routine, and the specs never get a chance to "finger". As to the routine, you can either script the magic and then invent the story line to follow it, or you can find a really good story, and then create the magic to flow into the story. Both work. I believe in the importance of establishing a "character" and from this point, you probably need to give thought to what kind of routine, story and character fit well with you. Use a mirror or video cam and try different things to get a feel for what will work for you. Then, practice, practice, practice... then rehearse a lot. You will be great! Lots of luck... Thanks so much for the advice!
I have decided to take out the trick Angle Zero and leave in the ID.I believe that Extreme Burn would make a great closer, especially with the whole routine being based around my wallet. Now all that is left is to practise, script it, practise with patter, practise on family and friends, and go out and have fun! But if anyone has any other advice to give they are more than welcome . Ok, I hope this comes on time...
I learned something from the Books of wonder that made me changed the way I used to create my routines. I used to grab tricks and put "tape" them together to make a routine and then create a story for patter, but then along came Tommy: Visualize a Dream... Your dream will give you the highlights the highlights will give you the shadows the shadows will give you the methods the methods will give your dream to your audience... basically this is the SECRET for creating your own magic and having the creative Juices flowing... Just my two cents. Rey Mejia.

Its good to hear that someone out there is attempting to routine their magic instead of just doing trick, trick, trick. Far too many magicians just wander from effect to effect without regard to the ebb and flow of their performance. Being coherent and having a beginning, middle, and end is just as important in a routine as it is in an individual effect. I had done a show where I took the "Patented 10 Card Poker Deal" (uses a Jonas Card...if not familiar look up the concept), "Smart Ass" (a very commercial prediction-force), an very old John Fedko Effect called the "Elusive Pimpernal" and finally an effect Called "Devious Dan" (a poker effect that involves 5 aces and correcting that situation as their game doesn't have a joker to make the 5 ace hand). I themed it around an International Jewel thief. Here's another...I start with Maven's Aces (10-20 force some dealing and cutting to find 4 aces), Do Twisting, Doc Daley...Finish with one of Michael Maxwell's Self Working Tricks that takes the aces back in the deck looses them again and relocates them. It gets good response despite it being all "self working". I get good response on both of these but you may/might be able to see how the effects are tied together by a common theme-idea. MartyG
