I am not worthy to be in such knowledgeable and interesting company! I got seriously interested in magic only about 8 months ago and am making the mistake of trying to learn too much too fast, but it is SO MUCH FUN. I'd love to get to the point of being able to spread a bit of happiness in a hospital or similar venue; there've been a few really good posts on that topic recently I've liked. Well, that and surprising my family of course! And to all those far more knowledgeable out there than I am (perhaps one day I can be an apprentice!) as somebody who is only a little ahead of a layman I have to say that learning a lot about magic - about how certain tricks are done - has INCREASED my interest and enjoyment.
Even though I know how some tricks are performed, it's a bit like watching the movie The Titanic - the fact that you know the ending before the film starts doesn't have to spoil your enjoyment. Now I can watch a performance and think (a) "Well, I know how it's done, but I still don't see how THAT is possible" (b) "That’s really cool"! Having lurked around here for a while, I have to congratulate the mods and all the participants for managing such a great, interesting and vibrant community! |

Any one who comes forth to seek wisdom and to leave some wisdom is welcome. Remember, you can learn from a child. It's not how the trick is done, but how it's performed.

Ahh grasshopper much homework to be delivered. My suggestion is to start with the basics. The basics will teach you the principle techniques. With a bit of flow, a dash of mystery, mis-direction, timing and technique you will be on your way to making some fans. When I first started they didn't have DVD'S. So, I learned the basics from book called Mark Wilsons - The encyclopedia of magic.
My suggestion is to tackle one type of magic at a time. Start with coins, master the basics, then move to cards etc. etc. Try not to clutter yourself with too much. I remember my eyes opening up to it all like a child that just walked into the candy store in Willy Wonka. It was hard, try to stay away from gimmicks at first. Coin magic is great for that, you can do so many things with a coin that requires no special gimmicks. - My thoughts

Thanks NexusMagicShop - indeed, that is what I have done. Started off with DVDs on coin magic (had always liked that!) and worked my way through (the 4 DVD set of Modern Coin Magic - very good) and then on to the Royal Road to Card Magic (DVDs again . . I have to admit I much prefer them). Trying out spongeballs as well although the DVD I got for that is not as good as the other sets. Anyway - agree completely about starting with the basics.
