I recently got back into magic after seeing the UFO done at houdini's magic shop in Vegas. I've been playing with it for a few days now but I am having trouble with some of the basics such as the anchor point to get the card all the way around. Can anyone suggest a good video on the UFO or IT in general?

Emont999,
I'd recommend the Michael Ammar 3 volume DVD set "Easy to Master Thread Miracles"; one of these volumes has the hookup you are looking for. The DVDs go into ITR and non-ITR routines and goes into many different types and sources for IT. Or get the Steve Fearson's "Floating Cigarette" routine (manuscript). That is the basis of most "floating card spinning around the back" routines. Another good tape is John LeClair's "Who's Afraid of Invisible Thread?". John does NOT use an ITR but uses IT. Hope this helps. Turk

I've been reading good posts about the Michael Ammar videos. A bit pricey, but it might be worth it.
Thanks, |

Magic Zone has a great video on the hummer card concept and other routines, plus it comes with more of "the stuff"

UFO is awesome. My friends loved it and were amazed they couldn't see the thread.

I like the handling in Who's Afraid of IT. Having a larger build, I can't have it go around my body. I like his handling.
Just my 2 cents, WR

I think everyone knows it's on a thread, unless they are a gormo. Most thread magic only fools magicians. Laypeople know it's on string, so let them enjoy that they can't see it.

sorry about that last post. I like to pick out my smileys first and then make up some words. I guess I slipped.
I think the fun with Invisible thread magic is because the spek's cant see where the thread is but they know it's there. So they just feel like idiots and make you out to be a hot rod! |

Steve Fearson's floating cigarette will give you good ideas on the hook up and some alternative handling for UFO. The great thing about UFO is that you can have someone give you their credit card, you make it do all sorts of things and then you hand it back clean - so if they think it involves IT they can't find it so have to think again! Just my 2 cents. I also saw it in Vegas for the first time.

I have been doing UFO with the Fearson hookup. I flick the card with my fingers to propel it. Try it.

Fearson's hookup is my favorite. I can easily control the floating object move in three dimension naturally with this hookup.
I used to float a coin or ring which I borrowed from a spectator. The spinning coin/ring floating in the air is extremely beautiful. |

UFO is really a beginner booklet, but it is the only one I saw describing in details the Card under Body effect. In the Ammar tapes, you only get a few generic words on it

I perform this every night behind my bar with borrowed credit cards and it never fails to drop every jaw in the place. People come back with their friends just to see this trick. Everyone always thinks that it's a magnet or static electricity or even a big hidden fan behind the bar, but NO ONE has ever suggested string (believe it or not). When you use some of the convincers (i.e. through your arms, around your body, etc.) people "know" that there can't be anything attached to the card. I've tried to drop this from my repetoire many times due to IT not being incredibly reliable and reset friendly (if it breaks), but people just can't get enough of it. I strongly suggest you re-evaluate your position on this effect. Your audience will thank you! |

A lot of 'string' work hinges on timing. If you're just fiddling with a playing card and then 'snap' it so it spins from one hand to another in a nice wide arc, the audience reacts first to the movement.
