I have a gig coming up where I'll be using first one figure and then another. In the past when I've done this, I've kept the figure I'm not using behind the backdrop I set up. When I'm finished with the first puppet, I bring her behind the backdrop and get out the other one. I think it's poor stagecraft to leave the stage, so I cover the switch with dialog with both figures (I use a lavalier mic).

Other performers do it differently, having their figures' trunks on stage with them. Some use a stand-up case which is also a place to seat a puppet. (I know Selberg makes one of these, but try ordering one from him some time....) I'm curious to know how you all manage this situation.

Thanks!

Bob,
If using more than one figure, I place only enough in a case that I can still quickly grab to avoid delays. If I have more than will fit - I place one trunk on a folding tray stand and the other opposite that on the floor. I have two stands if needed - and have done both with a third trunk on the floor to the back.
I'm lazy though - too much extra stuff to carry in - so I try to get by with just one case.

I use 2 stand up cases. It is like a roll on table when opened turns into a seat for the puppet. I find these easier to use in my shows.

I use my ATA cases for my hard figures...

But now I'm in a similar dilemma with my Axtell ostrich...where do I keep him prior to his appearance...I don't have the luxury of a spider backdrop/dressing room like our friend Lou Smile

How about a crate with air holes? A mysterious shipment from Africa. What could it be?

I use a backdrop for all my shows (see my avatar to the left). I have a stand backstage that holds four large soft puppets, though I rarely use more than two or three on most shows. I am currently working on a new "bird" theme show that will use six puppets, but it is still in the rehearsal stages.

I don't really have a problem with going behind the backdrop, as I wrote in bits of business and comedy that coincide with my need to be back there while dropping off or picking up a new cast member. Also, I use music for each intro and exit, which helps establish the puppets as "stars" of the show.

That being said, I still love to watch vents using the old fashioned method of reaching for the nearby trunk to grab the next figure...
