Some fabric stores still sell it, even though some forms of it are illegal to use in cushions because of the toxic gases that are emitted during fires.

Actually, I cut mine from some bath sponges. I bought a pack of circular multi-colored sponges, they're about 4" in diameter and about 2" thick. I also cut some funny shapes from them for a little humorous ending to the routine.
I bought these at the supermarket

He needs a piece 12 inches by 12 inches.
Usually a polyfoam cushion will do the job. It is usually only available in white, though. You will probably have to dye it. Rit and/or Diamond dye works just fine.

Go to an arts and crafts store, you'll find several different types immediately. Home Depot will also have the kind of foam you want. I never liked Rit dye for sponges, it never came out as vibrant as I would have liked, It does the general job, though. Never tried Diamond.

You do it by pulling the inside apart from the outside. To get an idea how to do this, take a regular sponge ball, squeeze it between the index fingers of both hands, then use your thumbs to pinch the inside of the ball through the outside. Pull your hands apart. You will feel the inside of the sponge ripping apart. If you do this right, you won't rip the outside. But you need to know when to stop!
