One of the most impressive is the version by Harry Lorayne in his "Reputation Makers". Incidentally the square specified in his Personal Secrets is not a magic square but a Graeco-Latin square.
There are 10 kinds of people: those who understand binary numbers, and those who don't.

Magic Squares work well with the Thought Transmitter. The spectator writes a number prediction in the Transmitter then the magician keeps writing down incorrect # predictions in the shape of a magic square. After apparently getting all the numbers wrong the magi asks the spectator to add the numbers which reveal the spectator's #.

To Alan Jackson,
Well, you are right in that the Harry Lorayne Routine in Personal Secrets does begin by creating a Graeco-Latin square with 16 playing cards. But then, you use that to create (without looking) a true Magic Square of numbers. And so, we're both right. Happy Firecracker Dennis Loomis

Since the webpage referred to a review by Michael Close, I went and looked up the review.
Indeed, Mike does say that the method given is standard, but the creator does offer a great tip for avoiding large numbers (and to look for another method in Larry Becker's "Stunner's Plus". The review finishes, though, by saying that the instructions you recieve don't help in the most challenging aspect of magic square presentations, which is making them entertaining. Mike Close says that means you're basically paying $60 for the board, which seems a little pricey. He also adds that, if you can't be bothered to make your own props, it may be worth it. This info is all from the February 2003 issue of MAGIC, and I have no personal experience with the effect. |

I feel compelled to point out that the "instant" (10-second) methodology described in Mindsights works for numbers of any size (one popular approach is to build a magic square that totals to the participant's birth year). For stage performance, of course, it's better to keep the numbers smaller, as the audience can then add them without a calculator. And for this reason, several approaches are described to constrain the size of the number.

The Magic Square that Derren Brown finished his show with is an example of how amazing an effect it can be. The one he performs is the one found in Harry Loraynes The Magic Book, but unlike i thought it is actually an invention of Theo Annemann's. I think that Derren's presentation is the best i have ever seen.

I got into Magic Squares originally by learning Orville Meyer's "Amazing Magic Square And Master Memory Demonstration", which is, as the name suggests, a combination of a 4 x 4 Magic Square that adds up to a selected number AND a memory demonstration.
It's not actually that difficult, although it is more of a party piece than a performance piece - it simply takes a bit too long for stage work. The bookliet mentioned above is undoubtedly out of print now, but I am sure it could be tracked down.

It amazes me everytime what a great forum the Magic Café is. Thank you so much to everyone posting your ideas here. I went from knowing almost nothing about magic squares to being able to include it in my act soon.
Keep posting, guys.

Can anyone help me with the name of the show where in Derren Brown performed the magic square as his encore? I'm really interested to check it out. Thanks!

Geeta172...
I don't think you need to dig up lots of magic square threads to get one question answered! But, to help you out: I believe it was his 'first' live show... by which I mean first live shows after he became a star! That means it was either the Derren Brown Live tour, or Something Wicked This Way Comes tour. When I saw it the performance wasn't an encore, and was in fact a part of his main act... that's from memory though, and we're talking about 10 years back. |

Hi guys, I've used the Total Destiny - Meir Yedid several times, but it only works with two-digit numbers, where I can find a formula for three-digit numbers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdpTFGecPBs
They use a system of three-digit numbers. Thanks for the help!
I love the magic & history of magic! My favorites magicians - Dai Vernon, Max Malini, Fielding West, Michael Finney, Jeff Hobson, Bob Sheets, Nick Lewin, Harry Murphy, Dick Oslund- great showmen of magic!
