To preempt all future inquiries, I just completed a Magic Café Search on "Search" which resulted in 229 matches. I haven't quite gone through them all, but I'm fairly confident that in at least some of them, someone will berate someone else for not doing a 'Search.' This in itself makes my head hurt.
This comes on the heels of last week, when I Googled "Google," and my computer literally wept. Sorry, I had some time to kill this afternoon. e |

Don't you hate it when someone tells you to do a search, so you do a search ... and all the search results are other posts where they say "do a search"?

Hmmm...
There is often a decided lack of the other side in threads like these, so let's simply try to add a minimum of common sense. Googling "google" is pretty dumb unless you want to make a point that lots of websites have the word google. Same for doing a search. Your comments mean nothing if you aren't trying to say these things. In EVERY SINGLE experience I have had with somebody saying they get too many or off-topic responses to searches, it has been THEIR fault for their search parameters. Real examples: trying to find out about Great White band, the search they used was simply "Great white". Of course they are going to get a bunch of results. Lo and behold, if they use "GREAT WHITE BAND" they get what they want. "Card magic" was one here at the Café and I am sure everybody here can understand that problem. I have yet to meet a search that couldn't be relatively efficient if a small bit of thought was put into search parameters. But, in case you weren't convinced or you still want to complain with base, let's try this on, all you have to do is answer honestly: if the Magic Café search was perfect, would their be more or less directions to use the search bar? Now, what if the imperfection was (mostly) due to user error (like googling google, let's say)? Exactly. What a utterly ridiculous thread and point of view. Jeez, did you want to complain the sky is blue too? |

I think This is apropos.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

I've stopped using the Magic Café's search box. When I want to look for something on here, I use Google to find it. I just set the search up so it begins with "site:www.themagiccafe.com".
For example, if I'm searching for Leo Boudreau-related posts, I would type: site:www.themagiccafe.com +"leo boudreau" You can search as often as needed, and refine your search right away, should you need to do so. Plus, it's much easier to see if the results are relevant to what you really want. |

Great idea Scott- the Café search function has always needed a fix, and this is a good way around it! Thanks, Jim
