If magicians do "bad Magic" then in my opinion magicians "are" the people "to blame".
The good and the bad in magic as a view point from the magician is only a point of view. I have written a lot about this over the years. Magicians that do what the public would call "bad magic" in my opinion - most of them really don't hurt magic at all. A long time ago I used to think that the only thing that can hurt magic was a bad performance of magic. Now I don't think that. I agree that there are a lot of magicians out there some of them good and some of them - perhaps bad - and have less performing experience. And many magicians also add to that the problem of performing magic at the "wrong time" and at the "wrong place". And then there are some magicians that don't set up the performing situation in the right way to get the maximum theater effect out of their magic. Why do I bring this up? Because I also talked about this in another thread. About what to do because the secrets of magic have been exposed to the public. And as some might suggest that the sky is falling because there are young kids doing great magic tricks on web sites like you-tube. However I think that the answer is to look in the mirror. And since we don't have any control over all these problems. The place to start is yourself. If magicians took the time to work on their magic and rehearse their routines and get a "set" program. That has a beginning a middle and an end that is a strong finish. If magicians took the time to set up the performing conditions to show the magic to get the "maximum theater effect - so the audience will see a magician performing magic and not just a guy - doing tricks. Like showing a trick at the office to some co-worker at work that they just picked up at the magic shop on their lunch hour. If more "magicians did magic" the audience would see more magic - than just people often annoying people doing tricks. I think that magic would be better off - in my opinion. Just my opinion.

Hi Glenn
I think your dead right. One good example prompts so many others to do better themselves. I am not a good magician but when I see a good one I am inspired to try that much harder.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Hey thanks Tommy - I think that one of the great things about magic is that there is something new to learn - everyday.
In magic the more I know the less I know - so there is always more I can learn. Just my opinion.

May I offer another consideration for the perception of magic question? If you go way back in the thread you'll see an excellent list that had Movie Star, TV Star, Television News Anchor, Musician, etc. at the top of the list and magicians, mimes, ventriloquists, and comedians near the bottom.
If you consider the amount of effort and manpower needed to facilitate those at the top of the list compared to the bottom you'll find a wide disparity. The magician, mime, ventriloquist, and comedian need nothing more than wide space to perform their craft. They are part of what Grotowski (and others) called the "living theater" which can be a sheet is suspended between two posts and an actor standing in front of it. A movie star, television performer and opera star all need hundreds of people, thousands of pounds of equipment and considerable expense to put up their productions. The public's opinion may simply be a matter of the size of the operation. |

Steve,
There are also some other classification system by acting teachers. They might look much more favorable for our art. Also the market classification would place David Copperfield, Sigfried and Roy, Lace Burton... way above the most well know dancers and even rock stars... The public's opinion may differ from the one of certain opinion leaders. Let's not accept the opinion of outsider to feel inferior. Personally I don't. I think magic is one of the most complete performing arts. ... Ok after clowning! which I don't have enough talent to do... maybe in another life... hopefully!
Magic is the art of emotionally sharing live impossible situations
