After several years of being closed to the public The Statue of Liberty is going to be open for the public to visit and enter, all the way to the Crown.
Great news!!! They say she will be ready for visitors by July 4th, 2009!!! I can't wait. |

I find your love for your City, evident in so many of your posts, extremely refreshing and inspiring.

You know, I love New York myself, I am from there as well. Yet I find the hike to the crown of the statue of liberty to be a lot of work for a very mediocre view. My car window is bigger, and on a clear day you can see.... well not so much. On a cloudy day you really see the clouds.
Still it is an experience to be bragged about. Anyone know where the detour was that allowed you to climb into the torch? I've been up the statue several times, always looked for it, and never seen it.

What a difference a lifetime makes. As kids we used to RACE to the top. It is so vivid...running up those steps. Now I probably couldn't walk up 10 of them.
Anyone who visits NY and doesn't at least stand under that massive statue is missing so much. You'll never forget it. What a great place to visit! Wish I could. As much as I was ready to leave after growing up there, it still calls me back. I'd give anything to walk the halls of the Museum Of Natural History...'cept I don't have nothin'...maybe someday.

Yes Doug (Daffy) they closed her off to the public after 9/11...
And Cliff, I remember as a little kid being able to go into the arm of the tourch, it still sticks out in my memory. Later when I was older and visited in '82, the tourch was closed off and all we could do was go as high as the crown. I was a little bummed but still just as happy just to be on the inside! And YES... I LOVE NEW YORK! |

That's why I take so many pictures...for you and others who can't come here in person. At least you can take the trip virtually. And soon I'll have a podcast to make the trip more vivid. |

A lot of my iconic memories have been torn down or obliterated (not to mention the Twin Towers).
All the cheap movie theaters around 42nd street that would have elaborate HAND painted massive posters and art work as flash. Many of the theaters had there own art departments to gussy up the fronts. It really sparkled and made a 'B' monster double bill into Academy Award night! Hubetr's Museum and Flea Circus. Rock & Roll shows at the Paramount. The Rocking Chair seats at the ROXY theater. Smokin' in the balconies. The Blind Viking Warrior dude who stood outside the Museum Of Natural History (and elsewhere) with his big staff begging bowl. The guy with the Fortune Telliung Parrot in Times Square. Being at the top of the RCA building looking across at the Empire State Building and imagining Kong the 8th Wonder Of The World. and of coursew the subways that would take you anywhere in the known world...and you got off near Madison avenue just to get one of the Rotissery Chickens to take home that filled the station with the best smells on earth. The smell of elephant crap as you entered Madison Square Garden (every April 4th of my life) and the excitement the smell meant. Macy's window and the BIG parade. What a city.

The general stress of trying to raise two children in the city drove me out in '84. And a day hasn't gone by that I haven't regretted it!
I don't think I'll see NYC again until 2010 when I'm planning on the next Comic-Con!
