I use 'puzzle' or 'experiment'. That seems to work best for me, but I am an amateur and only perform for my friends. My overall theme is always 'perception vs. reality', so those terms work well for me.

Magic encompasses a wide variety of styles. Some present things with ingenious secrets, and don't pretend to any powers. They are going to wonder "How's it done?" So they're already treating the "trick" as a puzzle.

I LOATHE the word "experiment" in conection to magic or mentalism. It immediately implies that it might not work.. or that it relies on science or change... rather than skill.

That's very interesting, since the usual implication is that mentalism uses or pretends(depending on performer) to use abilities of the performer that are innate, and are being tested, in some cases supposedly a single instance of a repeated study that would create statistical evidence in just such a scientific fashion.
And most mentalism works that I have read will advise the use of the word 'experiment' in exactly that way - situations where you are taking a chance on a method(say on a psychological force) but you appear to take a chance on an unpredictable ability (like clairvoyance) and the outcome may not be the desired outcome. So avoiding the word 'experiment' because you want to imply the outcome DOES rely on skill would seem to indicate you want the spectators to get the message, "I'm going to read your mind, but you better go through this whole thing thinking, 'What a good performer', rather than 'Hey, he has powers.'" Did I get your point? |

(said while pressure fanning the deck with faces towards the audience)
"As you are aware a deck of cards contains 52 possible selections (pause) right now I need only one." I use this script for my opening card effect which uses a Svengali pack. I always smile inside when I use it. |

Here in Brazil there is a problem that occurs often, and not only with younger wannabe-performers, but I have seem many [hand]skilled [supposed]card men saying things like "I've got a completely normal deck of cards...".
When I do use my Svengali deck I give almost no attention to it before introducing the spectator into the routine. I even spread the cards whilst saying with no needed emphasis that I'll have this particular person choosing one card. |
