I am going to be doing walk around magic and juggling for a VBS and I am wondering what suggestions you have for tricks. I am intermediate and have some other non-gospel magic tricks. Thanks, Philip

Do you work with animals? Last year we had a magician at our VBS and he did some work with doves and rabbits and the kids were speechless

Try cups and balls. Another thing you can do is ask in "The little darlings" section and ask them what you can do.

While you don't want to miss an opportunity to reinforce Biblical truths, not every routine needs to carry a message. So don't press or try too hard on that isue, or nobody will have any fun... especially you!
Walk around is more of a challenge than a parlor/closeup set where you can have props set up. So you basically have to work out of your pockets/bag/pouch etc. with instant reset effects. (Or keep going back to a base to restock/reset) But you can get a lot in your pockets A TT with silks coming and going are a treat for kids. And you are already on to something good with the sponge bunnies. Sponges plays very well. And Dragona has a good idea too, as there are other forums here that address magic for kids too. BroDavid

You might try the effect "He Died For You" produced by Dock Haley. You can find it at http://www.gospelmagic.com/. It is similar to the Genie card effect in Mark Wilson's CCIM.

Several ideas coming to mind. God says we will change in the twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet. How about quick color changing silks. You could do a vanish of a silk in the fist. Talk about how Jesus was put in the tomb, but when people came to get Him He was risen. Professors Nightmare. Talk about how people seem different here on earth but God loves each of us the same. I hope this helps.

Maybe a short ACR routine about how Jesus was thrust into temptation and how he "rose" victorious over the devil by following God's will and then buried in the tomb and He rose again. Maybe you could force the Jack of clubs in the beginning to represent Jesus as the Son of Man in the beginning of the ACR and then at the end you could do a color change to a King. The pop up ACR move could be strong too in a Biblical context.

What is the theme for your VBS this year? If you can do Gospel magic and fit in the theme at the same time, that would be great! It may require putting on your thinking cap and being creative, but that is sometimes the most rewarding part of the process.

Unless you already know the culture of the church that is sponsoring the VBS, I would suggest that before using card tricks you might ask if the use of cards is appropriate for this venue.
Some churches may not look favorably on someone using/doing "tricks" with a standard deck of cards, especially for children. It is best to be sure in advance, rather than be embarrassed. Hope all goes well.

I whole-heartedly endorse DougTee's counsel. I did a card effect for some U.S. and Canadian teens at a retreat this winter, and called ahead of time to see if this would be appropriate. The director gave me the go-ahead (whew) and said it wouldn't be a problem.
I am glad I asked the question up-front instead of trying to deal with a situation on one hand and trying to minister to teens on the other. Thanks Doug. You are right on. peace, phill

If there is an issue with playing cards, you may want to ask if you could use an alphabet deck instead. I have a routine where I talk about alphabet soup and used an alphabet deck as part of the routine. The alphabet deck actually fits better with the routine than a standard deck and the audience is looking at A's and B's instead of spades and diamonds.

I didn't know if I should make a new topic for this or not, so here goes.
I am also doing strolling magic for our VBS this summer. The theme is western/pioneering. I don't really have any tricks that fit the theme, but they want me to dress up like an Indian (being 1/4 Native American sure helps) and do some magic purely for entertainment as the kids arrive. I am planning on doing normal "street magic" tricks (like H&S, Misled, etc.) I may also incorporate a few gospel magic illusions. What are some good ones that are short? I will only have a few minutes with each group of kids as they arrive. Card tricks are out. They are frowned upon by my church mainly for the association with gambling (which is a big problem around where I am).

I did a Western Themed VBS once many, many years ago. Instead of an Indian, I played the role of a Traveling Medicine Show Pitchman. I remember that I did The Tarbell Many-Cut rope, explaining that I was cutting up a cowboy's lariat. Cards weren't a problem at that church, so I did the Haley Super-Jumbo King of Hearts.
I seem to remember doing a TT silk vanish pattered along the lines of hiding the word (represented with a blue silk) in your heart (red silk). Show that blue silk is gone then mention that the reason to do that is so when you need it, it's always there and make the blue silk reappear by doing the trick in reverse. Hope this helps. Oh yeah, if the show is outside, check the weather before costuming. 95+ degrees fahrenheit was no picnic in a 20 pound frock coat. |
