On a related note, we recently rewatched Godspell. In some ways, I like it better although its not as deep musically.
I love the fact that it reinterprets Jesus an the disciples as hippies, because that's probably pretty accurate from a cultural context and something people often don't think about. And I find the compositing of John the Baptist and Judas into a single character to have fascinating theological implications.... Oh and the opening number "Prepare ye the way of the lord" always gives me shivvers... and I'm not even christian (Yes, my wife is studying to be a priest. I, however, am Jewish.)

Dr. North. You bring up an interesting point and my memory is vague about the ending so I shall accept the cross was empty, the missing character who played Jesus was the interesting point to me.
During the overture of the film when the bus shows up you are correct that the character who played Jesus doesn't exist the bus. After the bus is offloaded the actors form a circle (oh...catch the guy who plays Judas and how he looks uncomfortable about the whole shebang, I like that) and faces are not clear because the sun is behind them. They do a lil' dance then put there hands up and then Jesus is being helped into his costume. Since this occurs at the bus I fell into the assumption he came off the bus but in hind site it could have been viewed as a mystical (remember the time it was made) appearance and it then makes me wonder if they were implying that Christ returned to play the role? Cool huh? Dang, now I'm wondering about the motivations behind a film made 37 years ago, The album is fantastic. Cyber...I knew you were Jewish pal. |

The broadway play opens with the audience staring at a wall at almost 90 degrees that falls back to become the stage floor. Then the disciples wheel out a giant cup (which looks a lot like the chalice my wife uses at Church for handing out communion) and Jesus descends from out of it.
Nice symbology on both fronts, I always thought. Santa....did you know BEFORE I posted my picture?

Btw... my wife has an interesting comment on this whole issue of historical accuracy.
"A story needn't be factual to be True." Really, she's drawing from a Judaic tradition of the teaching story. A story which, although it never happened, contains inside it one or more fundamental truths. Xtians often call these "parables" but this is a bit deeper and broader application of the concept.

Of course you do! New Yorkers are like that, which explains the mispelling (don't give your opinion by the way, I'll fight)....my lil ol' father is one and, as a warning, will be back from upstate on Saturday (back to NYC)
