I am visiting with my folks and reading some of the entries to them. A lot of good memories. I worked at the magic shop starting at 7 years of age. I remember doing some magic for Milton Berle when he visited. I also remember at age 10 being in a contest at the Commodore Hotel in N. Y. with Ricky Jay. He won. I also remember all the magicians that spent the night at our house including Slydini, Harry Loraine, Duke Stern, Pavel and many more. My folks are still in the magic business and selling on line. Thanks for all the kind words.

I had not seen this interview before. I used to buy from his magic company. He was always great to talk to, very funny and very honest. I tried to buy an effect one time and he refused to sell it to me. He said it was junk and to save up to get the better version. He used to have great "grab bags" loaded with tons of magic. I finally got to meet him at the last SAM convention in Chicago. I still get his almost daily e-mails selling magic for others. I had not seen this interview before. Thanks for the great interview Todd.

My pleasure guys! I love seeing some of the older interviews "re-discovered"
That one was 221 episodes ago and as I write this, we are at almost two million downloads of the various interviews that I have done. And Jim, please don't be offended when I point out that it is "Dodd", not Todd. I run into this all the time as you can imagine and am just mentioning it to clarify. I'm thrilled that you have discovered the podcast and hope that you enjoy them all! My best to Paul and his family! BTW.. Here is the direct link to my chat with Paul: http://bit.ly/sCxZrf |

Wow...
I always find it awkward to listen to these early episodes. Not because they don't contain great info and aren't worth listening to, but because I can hear how much I have learned about doing a show like this. Thanks again for putting up with my own personal learning curve! (And look at all of the advertisers that are still getting traction from their podcast ads in spite of not being current advertisers on the show. ;-) |

Paul sold me my first scotch and soda. It was Paul that actually named the trick as he came from a liquor store background ( owned by his father ).

I know I'm posting to a very old thread but I just came across this topic today. I worked for Paul, in his Sears Town Magic Shop, in the early 70's. This was, of course, after being a long time customer of his. I worked with Dave Rumfelt, Bruce Sterns (I think that was his name), and a host of others. We would close the shop down around 9pm and then head across the street to LUMS (now closed) where we ate, discussed magic, and wowed the waitress and the patrons with our amazing talents. THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIENDS. One of my best memories is being invited to Paul's home(with a select group) to have Toni Slydini perform for us, in person, and teach us some of his great misdirection techniques.

Thanks Dodd for reposting that link to the audio file. It was great hearing Paul's voice. I even learned a bit more about him. It sounded like your introduction to Paul's shop was well after my time there. Thanks again.

I too was one of those blessed to be a kid in Ft Lauderdale during the years of Paul's Magic and Fun Shop in Sears Town. Oh my gosh, I can't begin to count the numbers of hours and dollars I spent there and I loved every bit of it. I remember Dave Rumfelt, "Chuckles", Dave Dorlac, and through Paul I briefly got to meet some of the legends of magic - Slydini, Duke Stern, etc. I remember Paul himself with much warmth and fondness; despite his outer gruff persona, he was a softy inside. I owe a great deal of my love for magic to him. Paul taught me to watch magic for its entertainment much more than to figure out how it is done, so that I would develop my magic as an entertainer more than as a fooler of people - a lesson well remembered. He also taught me how to sell - not just to hawk the tricks, but (again) to sell the entertainment value over the mere trickiness.
I guess I'll have to buy a new reel now that I'm reminiscing about him. Yeah. He really like the reel. One time he did a little show in his shop for magicians. Tied a knot in a silk and said, "Watch the knot untie itself." Then "BZZZZZT!": the sound of a hand buzzer instead of a reel; it sent howls through the group. Funny! I sure do miss those days. |

Reading this thread again brings back so many memories. I probably could go on and on about Paul. I also was amazed by his memory. I moved from NY to Miami when I was ten. At age 11 I found about about Paul's shop so I had my father take me there with my birthday money.
I still remember most of what I bought that day: Walsh Appearing cane, Glorpy, small set of wooden billiard balls, 20th Century silks and Safari arm chopper. Cut to a year later and I went back when I was 12. Paul remembered me from the year before and remembered everything I bought that day. I was amazed. The other thing about Paul is as he got to know you he would steer you away from stuff he knew wasn't good or would not fit with what you were doing. Many times he helped me NOT waste my money from stuff he saw as c-r-a-p. He also guided me towards books that he knew would help me. By the way, if you can ever find his video lecture on reels then get it. He had master work on the reel. I attended one of his lectures and he had a line of guys buying his reels afterwards. Greg

Yes bought my first reel from Paul at a convention. Couple of years later the tension was weaker... I took it with me to another convention. Showed it to Paul and without question he took it and handed me a new one. I still use that reel. He was a character that definitely stood out in a Dealers room and always had a crowd around him.
