I redesigned my website and I was thinking of some kind of special effect to add to the site to make it a little more interesting. Not really for the magicians but for non-magicians who might visit about me and my shows. I wanted something that makes it a little more "Magical" but nothing over the top of annoying. I just want a subtle effect that might catch them off guard and think a, "Hey, wait a minute!?" kind of a reaction. I'm only thinking about having this on the main intro page so it wont' happen on pages that actually have information.
So I'm just looking for feed back. What do you think? magicjax.com Open the page and just watch it for a few seconds and you'll see what I'm talking about. Ron Jaxon |

If they stay on the front page long enough to experience it or notice it...I liked it.

Thanks Doug. Good point about them spending enough time to notice. I just added a little welcoming text to the intro page. That should keep them there for a few seconds longer anyway.

Are you talking about the background changing color?

You seem to have assumed that your viewers are viewing at a particular resolution.
My screen is usually set at 1680 x 1050. What I'm seeing is a grey bar at the top, going down into the color changing gradient as it goes down past your logo and menu. However, there is some black text at the bottom over the repeat of the grey bar that is difficult to read (Cut and pasted, it's the line that reads, "To learn more about Ron Jaxon and his performances use the Home Page menu. Magicians use the Magicians menu to find magic products, Ebooks and contact inforamtion." - oh, and the last word should be spelled "information") I suggest reading Splash Pages: Do We Really Need Them? for a good overview of whether you should be using them. Since dealing with fellow magicians often deals with secrets, I've never been crazy about magicians having easily-seen "general public" and "magician" sections on their sites. If you promote your site to the general public, then that's who it should be for! Have a separate site for magicians if possible, and otherwise promote a secret entrance to magicians that isn't obvious to the public (a URL that you only use in ads or on magic forums/magazines/etc.). Too often, you can unknowingly destroy the image you're trying to publicly create by openly acknowledging your magic connections. |
