I have been working on a portable seance show that can be performed for private parties held in the home. It has half preshow light seance stuff and then builds to a dark seance finally. The conclusion is designed to get scary and be entertaining, like a good horror movie. I want to produce a ghost visually before I banish it into the night. I have tried making a bird, like in Spirit theater, and have considered a "brain", like the one used in Manifestations and Spirit theater. What I really like is the swirling luminescent ectoplasmic spirit produces for the finale of Dick Brooks Seance held at the Houdini Museum in PA. In total darkness, a beam of glowing ectoplasim projected itself from the ceiling in a beam of light sort of way. It then manifested itself into a swirling ectoplasmic apparition, right in front of the audiences eyes. It is as large as a person, as I recall. It reminded me of the seance tricks used in Psychic Mafia (great read by the way. It is all about fraudulent medium tricks used at a spiritualistic camp that held seances for profit (Camp Chesterfield). The mediums would produce a glowing ecoplasmic ghost during, what the sitters believed to be, actual spirit contact. That is what I want to reproduce. Not as easy feat, but very well done by Mr Brooks and his co conspirator Dorothy. Check them out at http://psychictheater.com/

Lebanon circle has something that might be part of the way there, but it's pricey and requires an accomplice so I don't know if it would work for you. I've been lusting after it for a while tho.

Creating a realistic apparition in a seance environment is REALLY hard. When I did this several years ago, it was one of the most difficult things to do. I can't go over what we did, as I was taught this by someone and had to sign a disclaimer, but my advise is to go for something subtle. Somting not all sitters (and maybe no sitters) will see.
I don't know what Mr. Brooks did, but I'd love to see it. I've seen about 6 different theatrical seances to date. There aren't that many out there to see, as many of them are one-offs or have a short season. I guess I'll have to check this one out some day. Dave Birtwell |

I ordered that Lebanon Circle Corpse Candle. I will post a review after it arrives. I am going to try to use it solo, even though it states I need an assistant to operate. I have a black out near the climax and I am hoping that gives me enough cover to operate the thing. Hey Dave, can you tell me who helped you produce your apparition? I am always willing to pay, perhaps he will help me too. Thanks for the input guys. I don't know how I would get by without The Café!

I want to thank Steve for his nice comments about our show. The sequence he is talking about was neither taken from or adapted from the Corinda routine mentioned in a previous post here.
There are no more than the two people in the show, who the audience meets, and during the seance portion. We have a $10,000 guarantee if anyone can prove there is another person or persons involved the show, or backstage, or a stooge in the audience at any time. In fact it is only the two of us connected with the show in the building at any given time besides the spectators. Dorothy Dietrich, who is blond and does not cover up in any way, and myself (I have aa bright shiny bald head) never don any type of black art suit, and we do not own any. We do not cover up in any way. If and when the "ghost" appears it comes from about 15 feet high far behind us from the ceiling or "attic" where it "lives" as it were. The "beam" as it is described points towards the audience and comes all the way down to their feet before it morphs into other forms. It then rises all the way to the ceiling (14 feet) before it either vanishes or saunters off stage. There are a few others on the Café who have seen it and possibly they will comment on how it appeared to them. Best wishes, Dick Brooks and Dorothy Dietrich

He is a current August 2011 of a lay persons view of the presentation, to give you an idea of how it is percieved even with several distinct disclaimers. This was recently posted on TripAdvisor.com
Latest review on Trip Advisor “Psychic Theater at the Houdini Museum was spellbinding” 5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2011 ***** All I can say is if you have ever wanted to experience the paranormal, if your relatives ever described an experience, or if you just wanted to experience what is shown on the ghost investigator programs, this is the attraction for you. I was surprised my wife agreed to go to the event, as she is afraid of haunted rides at amusement parks and during Halloween haunted hayrides. The experience was terrifying. I got what I went there for and more. Would I go back again? Hell NO. That should say it all. The men in the room were more terrified than the women I think. The brochure states, "Not for the faint of heart. No pacemakers." Do not disregard those warnings. Expect to be out late, the seance did not get into the meat of the matter until eleven and went on past midnight. It was a stormy night, to add to the atmosphere. * Visited August 2011

That sounds unbelievably awesome!
I don't want to replicate it (currently I do more of a "Have seance will travel" style seance) but I really wish I could see it. Perhaps I'll make it to Pennsylvania (maybe I could go and call it a reseach trip, seance and braucherei?).

I have been interested in reproducing 'phenomena' for quite a while.
A suggestion is experimenting with UV products, ink and such on very thin cling film type plastic, lightly weighted. Also there are many electric glow wire products around, using these obscured within some kind of other medium so they are not so bright and flashy? Or you could shave a ferret and paint it with UV paint? Then release it into the room. (that's a joke BTW) |

In an effort to better explains what happens at our presentation I am posting this here.
This is because most of the people who commented have never seen the event. This is the latest Trip Advisor review. nurseontheloose Pittsburgh Reviewer 5 reviews Reviews in 5 cities “Paranormal show scared this believer!†Reviewed May 8, 2012 ***** 5 out of 5 stars This was an extraordinary experience to say the least. My daughter (14) and I went to Scranton last summer for the American Idol concert and had tickets to see the Paranormal show on the night before the concert. Having absolutely no preconceived notions of the place, I can say that the building itself is enough to give you the creeps. We were ushered in through the back door (previous reviewer noted the shaky steps), and I was immediately impressed by the absolute lack of predictability in that place. There was Houdini memorabilia EVERYWHERE and the rooms were dark and ominous for sure. The main seating area was a very intimate setting in a larger room in the middle of the building. Plenty more of the Houdini stuff hanging about and seating for about 20 to 25. The group started to coalesce and it consisted of a heterogenous group of men, women, gays, straights, old and young. (My daughter the youngest for sure.) At first I was struck by how "cheesy" the presenters were (Dorothy and an older man, forget his name). I was a little embarrassed for them initially and felt a little foolish for sitting there. That rapidly changed as this gentleman proceeded to capture our attention with one "paranormal" exhibit after another. There was a history to the place which involved a murder or two and the show evolved into a seance with the gentleman "channeling" a man named Walter. I saw things with my own eyes that were nothing short of Hollywood ghosts in action. Chandelier swayed, things flew off a table in front of me, and a tamborine started playing on its own. The evening culminated into a seance in the dark where people actually were screaming and one couple left as the young lady was saying that someone was touching her! I got myself and my daughter out of there and never looked back.
It was inarguably authentic and not for the faint of heart. You will believe, if you can handle it.
