I did a stage show this weekend and afterwards I visited the tables of most of the participants. At one table the hypnotee's wife and family told me they were extremely concerned at several times during the show. This was because her husband had what she called: "A dodgy back".
The first time she was concerned was on the drop-back. That was followed later when I melted her husband into the floor before she watched him getting up by himself. And finally, as I took on the persona of his favourite pop star, Elvis, he was... well basically all over me, rolling on the floor hugging crying kissing etc. The interesting thing was that, although his back hadn't felt great that day, he told me that he felt not even a twinge during the show and it now felt fantastic. Obviously we had filmed the show and the family admitted that yes I had done a full disclaimer which included asking anyone with a physical disability not to participate, "But he wouldn't listen and insisted in going up" said his wife. Obviously this had nothing to do with MY skills as a hypnotist but rather demonstrates the properties that lie within this thing we call hypnosis. I am extremely interested in this (mainly the control of chronic pain) and if anyone else has some interesting stories/anectdotes relating to this particular phenomenon, I'd love to hear them, either here in the room or by PM. many thanks, bobser.

Hi Bobster. I have had no exprience (that I know of) of people with bad backs volunteering for my shows. I alwasy begin with a disclaimer, like you.
But one weird thing did happen. After a successful show one of my volunteers had a massive epeleptic fit, and ended up hospitalised. The story even made the papers. I was very worried for him, and naturally concerned that I might have had something to do with the fit. Those that witnessed the fit assumed it was a result of the hypnosis - and a local paper reported this. However the mans sister was a nurse, and she looked after him during the fit and his transportation to the hospital. I was speaking to her the following day, and she told me that he was on very strong medication to control his epilipsy, and he had been warned not to touch alcohol while on the medication, as the two would react badly together. Before volunteering he had drunk a number of pints, and his fit was a reaction to the alcohol rather than the hypnosis, according to his sister. Apart from that I have had a few people behave oddly because they volunteered while under the influence of recreational drugs. I try to dismiss them from the stage as quicly as possible. I'm glad you had the video to show you were not at fault.

Crap, this is scary. Is this just isolated occurences? The stage shows Ive seen are young adults mostly on stage.
Is it the physical portion of the suggestions being carried out or hypnosis in general that possibly is triggering these episodes? I mean if you have them just doing some silly stuff like feet stuck to the floor etc. I would think it would be safer then perhaps playing Elvis......Bobser you are obviously very experienced but for begginers at stage shows, starting out with less physical type suggestions may be the way to go, for me at least. I guess anything can of course happen but trips to the hospital sounds pretty serious. I would be going nuts if something like that happened. I deal with seniors a lot and I guess a lighter version of a stage show would be in order for me at least. I was thinking of all the trips to Disney World I made. I got on some rides there and even at Six Flags that made me sick. I thought I could take it. I even had to lie down and was nearly throwing up at Six Flags. I saw the warnings before getting on and did not heed them. This guy gets up on stage knowing he had a bad back against his family wishes. Unreal. Candin

Don't worry - these are isolated incidents taken from several years of performing.

Here are a few.
The "man" once told someone they were a champion swimmer. He normally would get them doing the crawl on the floor. Befire he could stop this person he climbed on a table and dived off. He broke or badly damaged his neck according to an agent I was working for. There was a court case pending (although I never hear anything). I once had a scare when someone went into "hypo". I think that's how you spell it? The coma type state diabetics get when their sugar levels are wrong. It was scary especially as it was near the begining of my career. Anither time at the start of my career. Someone who I told their seat was on fire sprinted outside the venue and we couldn't find him. To make matters worse there was a mile long harbour 100 feet in front of the venue. We were worried he jumped in. Luckily he was found disorientated a few blocks away. I once in a theatre had some one volunteer who was completely deaf. Or so I found out after she just lay there all night. She had two hearing aids one in each ear. She wouldn't respond to any of the usual things and it took her 45 mins to come round. With the pressure of a crowd watching. They were working on the stage for a big event the following evening. When she came to she didn't know who her boy friend was and she thought she was shopping with her family five years previously. It took nearly another hour to get her back to normal before letting her go. I have met people who have attended my shows who tell me one of their friends reacted and went back into trance after hearing the same music that triggered certan behaviour. I have no way of knowing but they said that was the case. I know of a lot more stories too they are not uncommon. I don't believe they don't happen to most hypnotists especially at the begining. And Bobser you have to be really really careful with bad backs. If someone has a damaged back and the hypnosis removes the pain they could actually end up getting further damaged. And feel a lot more pain next day. Faith healers seem to do this a lot aleviate the pain temporary. It seems like a common thing. There are risks to doing shows and you really need to know about them before jumping in. If you want a really good book that will give a huge amount of ideas around pain and just about everything else then you should look at getting this.. Hammond - Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphores http://www.amazon.co.uk/Handbook-Hypnoti......4&sr=8-1 This is a HUGE book paccked with ideas scripts and techniques and is what you are looking for. It cost around £50 but is a steal. |

The Hammond book was recommended to me by an instructer MP. Is it mostly about pain reduction or does it contain lots of suggestions I cannot find free on line?
I thought it mostly had scripts to read and that is why I didn't give it a take. Thanks Candin

Sometimes things happen fast and you don't have the control over them. With 6 or more people all doing different things you need to keep an eye on everything.
Again this is something that can be a shock to someone starting out. Plus its easy at the start to make an innocent suggestion that is taken literally by the unconscious and can have devastating consequences. Like the hypnotist in Glasgo who told someone to take the nearest exit when a subject asked if they could go to the toilet. They walk straigh off the stage a 4 foot drop and broke their hip. And this hypnotist had 30 years or more experience. It happens. |

However its a great reference guide and has a lot of ideas contained it. I think everybody involved in hypnosis should make it one of their basic texts they should own. It will give you loads of ideas. I wouldn't normally recommend scripts and don't use them myself. But this book is so rich that it will inspire you if you want to go down the therapy road. If you ever plan to create cds then this book is a must. |

We frequently get people asking for scripts so they can a) cure their friend or relative or b) do self-hypnosis (although they've never done it before) to cure themselves. When other posters try to explain that it's not that simple, they either get upset and denounce the posters or else go to eBay or some place else for a CD to save their lives. Scripts are great for inspiration and ideas, but just using them for all instances of the same presenting problem is questionable at best. |

I mainly use process instructions around ericksonian style and a mixture of other therapy techniques and processes. Process instructions just mean you are not too specific about what you want to happen you basically tell the unconscious to sort it ou itself in its own way and time. I will also use some more directive suggestions to support. But most of the real work is done before both with other techniques mostly NLP based. |

You can also check out the discussion groups over at HypnoThoughts.com. There is a group or two there dedicated to pain management and medical hypnosis, and a couple experts in that field are members of the site.
Alternatively, you can look up Ron Eslinger on Google. He's probably the top name in pain management, and I believe Cal Banyan carries his home study program on his website. Scott Sandland (creator of HypnoThoughts.com) is also pretty experienced in pain management himself and I believe has some materials out about it. Joshua |

Well done with the show bobser,
disclaimer or not people will come up, you just have to be more carefull with the suggestion to person/s that are fitting i.e. don't have older people running after invisible leprechuans or other energetic routines. if its an older group be more settled or even all suggestions sitting down a younger crowd may respond better to energetic suggestions. we cant be preshow doctors but its wise to try and read your victims general health before you deliver your routines and sometimes a planned set of routines may not always be suitable for the volunteers and you may need to ad-lib as you see fit good luck with your future gigs - play safe man, its not just your reputation/career at stake, they are people with lives to live after the show and that is to be taken into consideration. much love |
