Hey Folks -
I'm contracted to do a series of shows at a Western-themed murder mystery. After we arranged the dates the producer started asking me if I have that trick with "the big cards?" She has obviously seen too many magicians' promo shots from the 50's. Anyway, with these shows coming I thought it might be a nice chance to work up a new routine. So here's what I've got in mind... If I'm going to do a really big card trick I want it to be really big, bigger than jumbo. I'm pretty sure that leaves mostly versions of the monte. What's your opinion of the different "larger than Jumbo" card tricks on the market? My first two thoughts were sidewalk shuffle and King Monte. Thanks Peter http://www.funnymagic.com |

Larry Becker created a well known effect titled "Will the cards match?" There is a thread here that touches on it.
I read another post from Mr. Becker where he spoke of a routine he did using this effect for stage in just the format you are requesting. You might email him (he is a member here) and ask about it. He seems to be a very accomodating and helpful person. |

Dan Harlan has a routine titled "Hold it Buster". It is found on his "Packs Small, Plays Big" video series. Tape two, I think.
It can be presented with a larger than jumbo set of cards... only four are required. It would be perhaps the world's biggest attempt at a double lift, but it can be pulled off. I have tried it with larger cards... if the cards were human sized, it would still be possible. Yes, Brother Larry Becker is extremely helpful and not just with information regarding magic related topics. Thanks Brother Becker....look forward to meeting with you in El Paso. |

I made a jumbo, jumbo overlap card from the 7/2002 Magic Magazine, and use it for the
"Homing Card" routine. |

Yes, Larry created the effect in 1985, if memory serves me; trouble is, the very words "will the cards match?" tip the outcome. In my Showtime column in the Linking Ring magazine of July and August 2001, I have two pieces -- Noah's Cargo and Power of Love -- both of which get away from tipping the outcome. I have since come up with about a half-dozen other versions, including at least one bizarre routine, The Power of Simon Magus which you can find in my Bizarre Bazaar column in the e-zine Visions. http://www.online-visions.com |

You can always do the Giant 3 Card Monte (aka Find the Lady). This is the one with the Giant mechanical cards. (Jacks and a Queen)

I do a no-gaff sidewalk shuffle..... easy to do and killer effect.
Bryan In case you don't know: 3 blanks and an ace of clubs... set a blank aside, shuffle, select, and the ace is the one set aside, repeat, repeat but reveal set aside card is blank but the rest are all real full examinable aces
Oh sure, I can spell "Antidisestablishmentarianism", but I can't type t-h-e.

The card warp is great with jumbo cards but why not try J.C. Wagners torn and restored card? J.C. does it using jumbo cards. Or try Sixteen Beme's, One card link with jumbo cards. Or jumbo card to wallet, it takes a big wallet but it is worth is... no, have it folded inside your wallet.
OR try the split deck with jumbo cards. OR the invisibe deck with Jumbo cards, or a jumbo card on the celling, or a four ace trick with 8 (all together now) jumbo cards. I think you got it, you can do nearly every thing with jumbo cards if you want to. Vibon Magic Sweden

Harry Anderson also has an excellent effect called 'Monarch Monte' with GIANT cards, but I don't think you can buy these anymore, but there is a version called 'Three Card Prince' with slightly smaller cards (still big though) - available from Hank Lee's. Or you could do what I did - buy Harry Anderson's book 'Wise Guy' (which is excellent by the way) and make up your own cards using canvas and a computer/printer.

With four easels - or maybe just four chairs to act as easels - you might be able to do a MacD's aces effect. The packet version, just 16 cards. Could probably make these by "hand" - that is, with your computer and printer.

Western themed? Dare I say Dead Man's Hand? Or certainly gambling themed. Two versions of the 10 Card Poker Deal have been marketed with giant playing cards:
Larry Becker's Hypnotic! is marketed by Magic Methods, first appeared in Harry's Apocalypse magazine and later in Larry's book Stunners. Tony Binarelli's Jumbo Mississippi Poker. It can be found in his book My Way To Mentalism. For stand up I've actually used Dave Solomon's The Power of Poker as described by John Bannon in Dear Mr. Fantasy with giant cards. No doubt a no palm version of "Cards Across" could be utilized, but I think the gambling theme might be better. Your producer was probably thinking of Chase The Ace. Paul. |
