For all who knew of this great man... Sad news indeed...

http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/28913997/

"Helio Gracie, the co-patriarch of the legendary Gracie clan that popularized Brazilian jiu-jitsu and originated the now-burgeoning sport of mixed martial arts, has died at 95."

Rest in Peace and Thank You, Master...

Honestly though, if there were a Gracie Jiu Jitsu school anywhere near me I'd study there.

You really can't overestimate the Gracies impact on combat sports. Rorion started the UFC which was little more than a giant (and very successful) advertisement for Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Royce wasn't even the best fighter in the family but they threw him in there just to show what Gracie Jiu Jitsu was all about. Everyone saw this 170 pound guy kicking butt in no holds barred, no weight class, fighting and Gracie Jiu Jitsu in America just took off.

3 months ago doesn't diminish the sense of loss...

I guess to me, at least.

To each his own.

He was a great man nonetheless...

The world has lost someone who was an inspiration to millions.

To each his own? I'm not even sure what that is supposed to mean. To each his own?

I'm just saying that Helio Gracie died several months ago. I'm not sure if you are just now finding out, or if you have finally gotten over it the point that you could post it as "news". But many, if not MOST, people here have no clue who Helio Gracie was. And couldn't care any less. Most people who actually know who Helio was are aware that he passed away a few months ago. That's all I'm saying.

Sad news. He seemed a decent fellow.

Wait wait wait... Backup here.

Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic? Why wasn't I told about this?

Because you were engrossed in more important matters.

So we didn't want to bother you.

The Onion did a book of fake front page news from the whole of the 20th century.
There was an article from the 20's titled "Man Ventures Outside Without a Hat!"
The Lindbergh thing reminded me of it. Man, that was a funny article.

The Gracie family sold their interest in the UFC because they instituted RULES!

They felt that it made you the guy who could win within the contents of the rules, it did not necessarily make you the best fighter. Gotta respect that.

The man had an impact, and the family continues to.
