I've notices a number of posts on various forums about "opening" and "closing" effects. A couple of times I have tried a "let the audience decide" approach. I hand out two baskets, one with various containers and simple props (cups, baskets, ropes, handkerchiefs). The other has various small objects like balls, rings, nuts, plastic egg, thimble or wood blocks.
I let spectators select 4-6 from each basket and then put on a show using those objects in creative ways. I fthis were done a t a Senior Center, for example, you would be guaranteed of sustained interest of at least some of your audience. This approach has the secondary advantge of not need ing anyhting 'examined' later on.

Reminds me of a bit from the ol Flying Karamozovs juggling shows where the audience brought in different objects to be juggled. Also Ricky Jay's current Rogue's Gallery show has that improv quality since audience members select different handbills and posters to detremine the order and which items are performed in the show. Bit I think its a good idea - as those mentioned do - to have a set opening and closing to your act.

I think this is an excellent idea, especially since everything is being freely handled.I think the other advantage besides nothing having to be examined later, is that you could sneak in a few things & no one would be the wiser.
Good thinking. Mike |
