Hi Jeff, it was nice to meeteing you in Lima Perú in February.
I admire all magicians that can turn a simple trick into a magical experience, something that the audience will never forget. Is there a secret for that? Thanks. |

Greetings Pasto,
I want to take the time to answer you question and at the same time put you on a bit of a mystery quest. You see I have answerd your question on this forum. I have gone back over my responses and collected the best thoughts for you. AN ALCHEMICAL FORMULA FOR MAGICAL CREATION Yes there is a secret. It is a secret formula. the perfect blend of 3 rare elements. he balance has to be perfect for this alchemy to work its magic and transform normal everyday tricks into magical art. Strong character+ original material+Inspiration. CHARACTER AND MATERIAL My friend Rudy Coby said there are only two things you need to be a famous, world-traveling magician. The first is a strong character. The second is original material. Those last eleven words are possibly the most illusive and difficult qualities to obtain. If you’re serious, you’ll go to Rudy’s website, and get a copy of his lecture notes, where he goes into detail about these two areas. For now I will start with a discussion about character . ON STAGE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=267&4 INSPIRATION Where do we go to find inspiration? You will look in different places than I do Pasto. That is what will make our shows unique. I talk about my personal inspirations in the following thread. I hope you and other serious magi add to it. I would love to hear where others gain inspiration. ANTHROPOLOGY http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=267&3 Now, after we FIND a piece of magical art that we are inspired and passionate about....how do we "take it to the next step" of our alchemical process, and create original material that blends with our character? I encourage you to read the following thread to learn more about that secret! FROM INSPIRATION TO STAGE http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=267&2 HOW CAN WE MAKE OUR MAGIC MORE THAN JUST PUZZLES? What is the secret to creating meaningful magic? Please read PRESENTING MAGIC VS. PRESENTING A PUZZLE http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=267&2 One of my favorite essays on making meaningful magic is a piece by Kevin Dunn, called THE ALCHEMY OF ORIGINALITY. Mr. Dunn is a chemistry professor and uses the metaphors of alchemy in an elegant and humorous way to get his thoughts in this are to us. You can find the essay in the MYSTERY SCHOOL BOOK. Please take the time to look at the above threads. It is my hope that I have given you all a practical magical formula that you can use to brew up some of your own unforgettable magic experiences. I would be interested in hearing from more of the Magic Café magi how you folks create memorable moments of mystery. Yours in Great Work, JEff )0+

Jeff, I'm a student of yours and strongly agree with your alchemical formula for magical creation:
Strong character + Original material + Inspiration For the past several years, I've been working on a book on this very topic. If you're interested, I'll send you a preliminary copy of my work-in-progress. Thanks, Scott Shelton |

You can buy the Mystery School Book at our web-catalog: shop.yourmagic.com, along with many of Jeff's other products (and those of Eugene Burger and some others.) Jeff usually carries one or two along when he lectures, as well.
