These are all great ideas and advice. I'm going to sort through everything and figure out what will go best with the setting I'm in. I have a performance that has two 30 minute sets of card, sponge, and coin magic. I can thumb through everything and fit it together. Thanks for all the help, it goes a long way.

I had quite a few gigs for small groups from 12 to 25 people this last months. Usually around a family/friends dinner. In those cases, I sell a close-up show, of about 20 minutes long, in which we are all gathered around a table (they are sometimes seated on two rows) and I work there as I would have done if table-hopping. BUT, the material I work is more diversified since the show is longer and since I don't have to deal with the "re-set" and "pocket management" you have to deal with in table-hopping situations. I love it!

When hired to perform walk around for a small gathering, I EXPECT that after I work the first small group, the others will congregate. Then I end up doing a parlor show in front of everyone. Fortunately, I have a pretty extensive repertoire.
What I prefer to do is perform for all at once from the onset. Even though I warn the client that this will occur...they sometimes still insist on strolling. So, when this occurs, and it always does, I turn it into more of a parlor show using strolling effects. It's mostly my walk around stuff done in front of a larger group. What I've discovered is to break the show up in two segments. Since the routines are shorter, I'm doing many more effects. After about 30-40 minutes, I've found that due to the amount of information and stimuli they are trying to process, the last part of the show tended to not get the type of response the routines normally would get in a shorter set. So, I stop and take a short intermission, only about 10-15 minutes. This gives them time to clear their heads. During this short break, I leave the area. It's fun to hear the buzz from the spectators during this break. I then return to finish the last 20 minutes. I think it's best to have the second segment shorter than the first. I've noticed that since doing this, the responses to the latter routines are NOW as expected and the energy level is where it should be. Hope this helps. Patrick |

I now am somewhat prepared for a parlour act lol. I hope I can stay in small groups and extend the hour. I would prefer a parlour act not opening up. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. Said he had a small house party and planned on performing the same few effects for different groups the entire night. When he arrived just about the entire party surrounded him and is a few minutes he completed his set (he was hired for two hours I think). Get the audio file downloads as he discusses how he got through that night and how he handles similar situations now.
