I travelled from New York to London this past weekend to see the show both Friday and Saturday nights. It was extraordinary. After all, how many mentalism performances send the audience out into the night singing in the aisles?
The routines were great, the emotional ride for the audience spanned the gamut (fun, mystery, longing, surprise, delight), and Derren's mastery of the stage, control of the audience and plain old charisma were thrillingly on display. I understand the London run is sold out, but he's touring the show again next year. See it for goodness sake! Bob Oh, and I still have that d****d song in my head. |

Flying from New York to London for the weekend to see, ummm, "a magic show" raised eyebrows among family and friends. (As it did three years ago when I flew over for Something Wicked.) But to say it was worth every penny would be an understatement. After a lifetime in magic and mentalism, it's now rare for me to have a sense of elation from watching any performer, let alone one who stands on stage for about two hours basically just, well, talking. Yet elation is exactly the sentiment that washed over me as I sat in the darkness and watched brilliant bits of subtlety, imagination and stagecraft parade before me.
With co-conspirator/director Andy Nyman, Derren is once again giving the public a grand spectacle of intelligent entertainment. Being a director myself (more of a coach, really), yes, there are a few tiny moments I would have done differently – but then again, that’s true for when I watch any Broadway show. The fact remains that the audience leaves the theater laughing, smiling and totally thrilled by what they saw. It’s an amazing accomplishment – and especially so because Andy and Derren have done it again and again! In talking with Derren afterwards, I blurted out that “You are our Houdini!” And in thinking about it now that the jet lag has waned, I think it was a rational statement. It is my conviction that 50 or 100 years from now mentalists will look back at the Derren Brown era the way magicians look at the age of the King of the Escape Artists. By all means, see this show if you can. Ken |

I'm hoping it'll be television like Something Wicked & Evening of Wonders.

I'm really bad with remembering names, and I must say I was thrilled being able to meet Derren, so forgive me if I am mistaking. Anyway, I hope you are right. I think it is a nice comparison and I do believe Derren Brown will be up there with Houdini, Dunninger, Kreskin, Annemann and a few others when we look back in a couple of decades. Maybe if we could have his shows broadcast here in Belgium, the audiences would start to become interested in mentalism again, which would be good for business. I'm still having a hard time selling mentalism while I used to be performing regular magic shows weekly. I could continue to this, but my mind is now tuned into mentalism and that's the road I want to take. (I guess I have to build my own road here).

You are raising a good question Bartelli...
Ideally, would it be better to wait for Derren's shows to be broadcasted in Belgium to raise audience's interest so that you can jump in and perform mentalism, or is it better to have mentalism quite an unknown thing here and start to come up with an original way to tackle mentalism and present it in your own way that will make you the pioneer of mentalism in Belgium, like Derren was in England when he started his TV show? But maybe it has been discussed on other threads already, and my comment doesn't belong to this topic, so I will happily shut my mouth (well, at least keep my fingers still, it should be enough) Cheers M. |

Thank you for your reaction on this, M. I don't want to wait for Derren's shows to be broadcast here. But Like you said this is a bit off topic. Anyway, I'm working hard trying to sell mentalism here as a form of entertainment. Up to about 15 years ago we had one guy who was well know for his mentalism stunts, but many people of a newer generation today don't even know him.

The guy who was well known here was Jan Bardi. He also was in the phenemonon show in the US. He is a great mentalist, I think. But he stepped out of the picture and now there is a gap to be filled. He also worked as a coach on the dutch version of phenomenon.

Ben Brantley, the chief theater critic of the New York Times, saw "Enigma." How many "magicians" can garner reviews like this?

Saw the show last Friday and I loved it, except for the spirit cabinet part but that's a personal thing. Especially the ending was brilliant which I think almost everyone agrees with. I was also lucky enough to get a mysterious black envelope on my seat which I thought would be used in the ending. Unlike my neighbors who immediately tore open the envelopes I held on to it until I was back in my hotel, at least its a nice memento.

I was the show last night - it was just wondeful.
The end feat was so beautifully dressed up into something wonderous. The coin in wool trick never looked so beautiful and whilst some "tricks" were more common in their methods the presentation is increadable and many were utterly beyond me and I have a half decent grasp on mentalism techniques. For 1300 people to hang on every word this man said for 2 hrs (having paid the same as a full west end show) - with a bland set and just a few victorian chairs.... is proof of his tallent. we have all been told not the reveal the final trick but......when it airs on TV... you'll love it. |

Enigma is the first Derren Brown show I've seen live. And he did not disappoint. He's a fabolous showman, and I think many magicians can learn a lot from his showmanship (at least I can). The only thing that surprised me a little was that if you know basic mentalism methodology it is pretty easy to guess many of his methods. When I've seen him on tv I've often been (and still am) completely clueless about how he accomplishes his feats. Well, I guess it makes a difference when its possiable to edit the performance afterwards.
Warm regards, Estabrooks |

Perhaps simply it's a total diferent kind of work ( frame), theater and TV.
Close-up tv and stage... Besides it's important to know how does it works ? For a magician yes I think but otherwise ?

Got my ticket for the first night of the 2010 tour, in Swansea, Wales. Second row from front, off to the side. The Swansea dates listed on Derren's website are incorrect, so the show I'm seeing is at 7:30pm on the 10th of February in Wales. I leave London at 9:00pm the following evening, and it's a four hour train journey back to where we're staying. What could possibly go wrong?!

The team on Derren's website stated a couple of months back that there would be no London shows during the 2010 'Enigma' tour, but Andy Nyman's website disagrees.
