Which will freeze first? Boiling hot water, or water that is cool to begin with?
And why? http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/tech......1173284/ I guess this would make a good sucker bet, if you have the time.

Hmmmm wish I had a large collection of temperature sensors to watch this heat flow and phase transition happen.

I actually tried this once. The cool water froze much faster. Could be different under certain labratory conditions I guess.

I've never tried this, but my guess is that the cold water would freeze first. I think that there are a few conditions that could change the result.
First of all, if you are only using a small amount of water, it is possible that some of the hot water may evaporate leaving less water to freeze. If there is less water to freeze, it will freeze quicker. Secondly, it is possible that the convection currents set up in the hot water may cause keep a more even temperature distribution throughout the hot water. But I doubt that this could have anything to do with it. Colder water will freeze faster. The end result is that, regardless of the ice's origins, the cubes will cool my whiskey equally well. And isn't that what we are all interested in? |

I've heard hot water freezes faster because it evaporates faster. But, I still use cold water to make ice cubes. Haven't read the link yet, but I'll check it out.

That's a short article! And I noticed an error (I think) in typing. It says that -34.8 F is the same as -37.1 C??? Is that true? Doesn't seem right.

You know, I remember reading this in a magic book years ago. Don't ask me the name of the book, it's been more than fifty years ago. One of those books that cost a dollar, had the good stuff in it. lol
Anyway, the effect was how to make water freeze. The trick was to take a pail of water outside on a very cold day and let it sit until just before it froze. You could tell by the thin sheet of ice on top. Timing was important. Then you brought it inside (secretly) and as you poured it into a glass it would freeze before your eyes. Something about the pouring and sudden change of temperature causing it to freeze instantly. That's not the exact wording I'm sure, but I do remember it saying to use warm water because it would freeze quicker. Again the sudden change of temperature was the reasoning. Never tried the little trick, but every time the water subject comes up I think about that one little stunt and just assume that warm water would freeze first. Maybe not oh. Odd how that thought stuck with me so long. Tom

Hot water freezes faster than cold water but, because of the additional evaporation, you end up with less ice starting with hot water than with cold water.

We did this as an experiment when I was in high school or junior high, and it is true. We didn't measure the starting mass of the water vs. the ending mass, but the hot water did freeze almost clear, while the frozen cold water was cloudy.
We didn't believe it until we saw it.

I'd like to hear more. I was trying this out on my cousin some years back with 2 glasses in a normal freezer compartment. We just checked on them every few minutes until one formed a skin, and it was the cold one.

Which freezes first, the chicken or the egg?
I'll say the chicken; I don't know anyone who freezes eggs.

My computer froze this morning before the water in the icecube tray. Does that mean anything?
