I think the Magic Castle is very endangered, and that makes me sad.
I am not much of a joiner, and live far from LA, but worked hard on my audition and felt on top of the world when I learned I had been accepted. Since the article implies that anyone and their camel can get in, every magician should make a pilgrimage while there is still time. While a bit frowsy, the Magic Castle is still magical! Can you find "real" magicians there? Yes! What a waste to see this once peerless structure on the way down. So it's a supper club, there to make a profit? How else can it eke out an existence? How many contributors on the Café? But, I forget. This is America, land of no-deposit-no-return, what have you done for me lately? So, yeah, I remember when we had a world-class club house for magicians that equaled or exceeded anything else out there. Still does, actually, I think. But, when it's gone, it's gone... Jim

The Magic Castle is in great shape. We are financially secure and are looking forward to great changes and a great future.
Things change. As the value of the real estate that we are sitting on has risen, so have the costs of doing business. We have had to adapt in order to survive. But the Academy of Magical Arts has managed to make the changes necessary to survive into the forseeable future. We have improved our building, our furnishings, and professionalized our staff. Our food and beverage service is improved, and prices have come down since we have taken over the food and beverage in January of this year. There is a conflict being worked out between the owners of the land and the buyers. We our able to continue operations on very favorable terms until that is settled, and have great relationships with either side of the dispute, and have understandings that will enable us to create a good lease when everything is decided. We are not on our last legs at all. We are doing very well, and are very sanguine about our future. |

The last time I went to the castle the food had (the least to say) improved and the shows were outstanding. What else do we want? Meeting other magicians? This works as well. The same way magic is evolving, the castle is entitled to (or rather has to) evolve.
Is the castle there to remind us of our youth (who's youth) or to be the world's shining temple of magic? For me right now it pretty decently succeeds being both. Even if I sorely regret the passing of the Professor, he is dead and magic (including his) is alive. Thanks to the ones who keep it alive in our days.
