Stretched writing....
The idea behind it was you have a image that was a bunch of parallel lines. Thin lines with some thick places as well. To read the card you tilted the image and looked down the lines and you could see the value of the card then you rotated the image and looked down again and you saw the suit. It is a way to make hidden messages using lines. Any idea what this is called. Not the trick but the way of making the message. I tried several ways to look it up on line but no success. It is a common method but I can’t find it. Any help would be appreciated. Posted: Jun 11, 2009 2:41pm ------------------------------ Something like this. The lines form words. Look in the direction of the arrow, tilt the paper and you can see the word is HELP. What is this called? |

I don't know what it's called or what issue it was described in, but I know what you mean. When I was a kid, my dad would go to the Swap Meet and have a evangelistic booth, handing out Bible tracts, etc. One of the things we handed out was a card that had John 3:16 on it in this format.
As to how to make it, simply use a graphics editing program like Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, etc. Or a desktop editing program should work, too. Make a new image, type some text in, then stretch it vertically and squash it horizontally. You can also do it with handwriting; give it a try. Joshua |

I thank you for the advice. I know about using those tools, but was wanting to try to locate the actual article in Magic magazine.

I don't recall seeing this in Genii or Magic but I do remember seeing it in The Mulholland Book of Magic by John Mulholland.

I've never seen any methods in print, but it's fairly easy to do with a ruler, a pen, and a steady hand.
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
