Anyone know the history of the six card repeat and why six cards are used instead of four? Just seems logical to use four of a kind to me. More curious than anything on this.

Well, it was invented by Tommy Tucker, back in the 1930's or 1940's. I think the use of six is due to the throwing away of three cards. It's easier to conceal the work if you have six to count. Three is one of those numbers that is mystical. You almost have to understand medieval thinking to understand why three instead of two or four. The same is true of six.

There's no law that says you have to stick with three and six. I can see the logic in not only throwing away four cards out of eight, but in picking out the specific four you want to get rid of, like four twos. This could be used to tell a story. It might even be better by throwing away an entire hand of five cards out of ten each time. Work on it.

Bill is correct in Tommy Tucker inventing this effect. I believe it is written up in Hugards Card Manipulation series. He used the glide in his method.
I think (it is only a guess) that 6 cards are used because of the symmetry involed and maybe because of the old theory of three in magic. More cards become cumbersome and three sounds good when counting. Again just a guess though. Maybe we could have seance and ask Tommy? Richard

Check out Pat Page's combo of cards to pocket and six card repeat. It's in one of the Routined Manipulation books by Ganson. It is so good that FRED KAPS USED IT IN HIS LAYMAN ACT.

The real question is not why six but why playing cards?
Again watch the third video "Why must we repeat ourselves" on the site http://www.magicalwisdom.com/infopages/view/mm_talks

If you used more or less cards, then it wouldn't be the 6 card repeat?
Seriously, though..read through Bob Neale's Life, Death, and other Card Tricks are there a few six card repeats that don't use six cards or even cards.

The best one that I know is Senator Crandall's one. It's very funny and can be found in Tarbell. There was a rendition of it in an old VHS by Al Cohn.
The performer has to play on the amplitude of attention otherwise the effect feels repetitive. The lack of climax is also a problem with these effects.

Ted Lesley did the six card repeat in almost every show. He had a climax, which was followed by a very magical ending.

Lesleys routine is in his L&L DVD's so I don't think it right to discuss it here??? It isn't really that different.
I believe that six cards or what ever are used because if you use less, you could just fan them and they could be easily counted. If you use six, counting starts to become easier than just spreading the objects out. Michael Close talks about this in his Workers book when he discusses Elmsley count. Also, I don't feel that it has to be cards. Bruno used bills, I have worked routine with bills and also with beer mats Juha-Matti |

Ted had an interrupted ending. Just before the last count, he asked, "How many were left?" He would pretend to hear "six" if it didn't actually come from the audience, and he would spread them in a wide fan to show three cards.
Then he would turn the three cards into six and throw them each as he counted them. What made Ted's routine different was that Ted was an entertainer, just as Tommy Tucker was. Most magicians aren't. Ted could recite poetry and get a round of applause. Payne is an entertainer.
