Anybody know where I could buy a few gels in specific colors and not in a pack of forty?

Dear boynextdoor (if that is your real name),
I don't know where Lancaster is, but does it have a stage lighting company, or a concert production company (audio & lighting), or an A/V company, or maybe even a music store that rents such things? If you're nice to them, chances are that any of them will sell you gels in small quantities. You'll need to be able to tell them the colours, and the sizes. Cheers from Toronto!

If you're in Lanacaster, CA... there are a lot of shops in LA that have gel by the sheet if you can make it down there. We use Bulbtronics on Cahuenga but there are many others. Most music stores just have those 4 packs of primary colors from ADJ but trying the local rental houses or production companies is a good call.
Good luck!

An anecdote on gels:
My scenography / stage technology instructor in college once found an old set of lighting gels that predated the modern plastic type; the older gels were actually cast from gelatine. Having a somewhat sadistic sense of humor, he asked one of his students to go WASH them, adding, "Be very careful; they're VERY EXPENSIVE." He was quite amused by the student's consternation when she tried to wash them, and they proceeded to melt and dissolve.

Boynextdoor,
I am a lighting design major and if you are wanting black light gel you are not going to find it. Black light is actual UltraViolet light and not a color. If you are looking for the color associated with black light then I would recommend Roscolux 382 Congo Blue. This should give you the closest look to black light, but since it's transmission is only .56%, I don't think it would work well with your camera flash. Rob Pond |
