The last party that I worked at was a graduation party for a high school girl. The gig went really well and everyone had a great time. When I got home I was telling my wife all about it and she suggested that I add more non-card magic to my routine. At the party I performed Daniel Garcia's Greed (I love this trick) but the rest was card magic. I started to contemplate what more I could do. I went out and got Darwins encyclopedia of TT magic. I am currently making my way through the vids and practicing but I am really looking for a good story type routine to work in with my card magic.
A friend of mine who got me into magic told me how he saw a guy do a routine with a TT and tell a story. How he went to the wrong club (pulled out a rainbow streamer) smoked a cig (extinguished the match) and got shot (does something with a bullet). So I am trying to think of a routine with creative productions and vanishes LIKE this one, but apparently my creative juices are not flowing... Any ideas? Thanks, Zack |

Hi Zack, welcome to the Magic Café. Cards are great, but can become monotonous if used too much. There are so many close up effects that don't use cards. Keep your eyes open and you will find some killer stuff that rocks!

Sponge Ball (or rabbits), coins, and rope tricks usually get big reactions.

I am in the same position in that I am looking for something new to add to my routine. I am thinking of finding a good ring on rope routine since I don't do that and it seems to fit the bill. Easy to carry with a great effect. I saw Christopher Lyle do a routine on youtube and it was killer. Any idea of the best ring on rope?

Thanks Monty...glad you like my routine. It was inspired by Jay Scott Berry's Symphony on a Ring and String Routine that I think he still sells. I'm not sure?
The routine that I perform has under gone many changes and modifications over the years to make it more me, but it's a great routine for anyone interested in changing up their act a bit. I have never done ring on rope...too clunky for me. I prefer Ring on Ribbon. Seems to be more elegant. There is also a sleight of hand free routine on the market called Swing a Ring that many have had success with...but for me, I prefer the slight method. Where as there are things you can do with Swing a Ring that cannot be done in my routine, SaR is very limited.

Fellas,
Thanks for all the great suggestions. I watched a youtube video on Jay Scott Berry's Symphony on a Ring. Very elegant, very artistic. |

Can't go wrong with sponge balls. A lot of people underestimate their potential. Some of the most visual magic come from sponges, and their not that complicated. Check em' out. Sometimes ringflights can be worked into stories like you're talking about.

Here's the You Tube Clip of Jay's Full Routine:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR1Z7yxEu......index=26 It's pretty straight forward if you're already familiar with ring and ribbon or ring and rope slieghts. Jay taught me personally at his lecture 20 years ago. I had the entire thing down in about 2 hours. With that said, the way you see Jay perform it on the clip is EXACTLY how he performs it. For him, it's more of a performance piece. A bit "fru fru" for me. Also, some of what he does isn't practicle for the strolling magician, so I altered it for my own liking. Either way, it's a great piece and is worthy of being in ANYONE's act! Christopher P.S. To see my version click here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFmo3PgRwuM&feature=channel and advance it to the 3:23 mark. Enjoy!

Anything with a borrowed finger ring is fantastic... Gregroy Wilson and Garrett Thomas both have some nice work with finger rings. I do ring to wallet, ring to shoelace (interlaced) and Ring Fianle. I nave several ring on string moves and also use a no ring hank by Lynetta Welch. The emotional impact of a finger ring routine cannot be beat.
Sponge Balls and Sponge bunnies are killer. Any worker will tell you that. Learn a good routine and see for yourself. Richard Sanders Fiber Optics is a great routine. Rope routines are great. I often change one dollar bills to hundreds. I came up with my own patter and twist, but my version of Extreme Burn is so strong I'm often asked to repeat it. Finally I do a card trick that's not really a card trick. It's an unpublished trick by Dean Dill using the moving hole principal. Speaking of that, A very memorable piece is Michael Close's pot hole trick. it's great. magic with your business card is a great thing to have in your arsenel.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

Christopher, First of all thanks for sharing your ideas and opinions. I really enjoyed your presentation. I like how you got it in the hands of the spectators. Seriously, I hope everyone who watched that took notes because that is great magic. You took a routine that was completely "self performed" and made it very interactive. I thought you were funny and charming. Thanks again for sharing and honestly I hope you are always this willing to help out a fellow magi. Zack PS Baller suit! |
