I've always thought and I'm not alone that this is nothing more than an ebony stick with two ivory tips: well, religious fanatics had to torture a lot of poor jugglers to ascertain the truth. However in certain occurrences, that apparently armful stick was offering some strange possibilities. Due to their torturing and dismantling of body parts, escamoteurs progressively took the habit to do magic with these balls only by sleight of hand: it was safer (one could do a two in the hand and one in the pocket here). Yet at the time, the church was running the universities and the education of the elites: who would think that they could all be stupid and murderous... in vain? Would tortured poor fellow keep on claiming the power of their wand and being burned for that, when the could have escaped just by admitting finger flicking? An archbishop gave me a hand to access the archives of the Vatican: the way the truth was found that I read was hair raising but the facts started emerging. This had not always been just a stick. I'll show you what is described there and what some courageous young fellow gave their lives to testify. Don't expect to see finger flicking here! I don't have this talent and the inquisition furthermore required the poor jesters to cover the balls with cups to prevent any sleight of hand (take the cups out only at this stage). Just watch what a wand that was confiscated by the inquisition, secretly kept for more than 500 years in a chest in the cellars of the Vatican, was doing before its owner was sentenced to have his members disjointed and his body burned for purification. Today it's less risky but the effect is still wacky!
So yes Bill: the wand Then the performer can suggest that the magic could also be hidden in the balls to end up admitting that the magic was actually... in the cups (revealing the large loads). This is actually more or less the script of my copper balls routine where neither the balls nor the hands ever seem to go to the pockets but the cups which have been shown empty all along the routine produce their large loads none the less.

Volumes of valuable information on Cups & Balls could be gathered from just these forums.
Etienne I know you are on the Magic of France VHS, but are any of your cup performances to be found anywhere else on video?

No but I may shoot two or three different ones properly and put them on Youtube. My son is breaking my balls (naturally only the magical ones) to shoot the routines properly with an audience (as you know the dialog and their reaction is what is the most important). Since I have a bit of time out of business now, it may happen.
Apart from the routine you know (Magic from France), I have a three cups multicolor balls routine ambiguously making fun of the middle age inquisition, a Nielsen tea cup routine about the Chinese tea ceremony of Zen monks, and a metallic (copper) balls routine (completely different technical solutions from both Conus -whether described by Robert Houdin or differently by Ponsin-, and Paul Gertner) also with a script against religious fanaticism. Hopefully we'll shoot this during the summer.
