Ray Haining, Dai Vernon caused quite a ruckus in the early 70's when he said that most magicians really don't fool anyone. Rather, the audiences are inordinately polite.

No doubt these same fears and arguments were voiced just as loudly 100 years ago.

With all the knowledge of magic being some what public. I think that a lot of it now depends on the presentation. Just knowing how to do a trick does not make you a magician. Being able to present a trick and really perform it is where the art of magic lies. I know that when I watch a magician I am thrilled with the presentation and the theatrics of it all. Even if I know what he is doing I am still amazed with a good performing artist. I have had people who knew about a trick ask me how did you do that? Well, even though they knew about the trick the way it was performed was where the entertainment value was. So I'm not discouraged about the public knowledge of magic, I just keep on striving for the best presentation that I can do and I think that the audience really enjoys it.
