The copper Penguin cups are definitely nicer than the brass MM cups imho.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

I agree completely. If Acar wants to improve the quality of these cups significantly, all he needs to do is to clean them completely before shipping them. I realize how much work that is. I've done it many times.

Brass can look a bit cheap and needs to be polished to look at it's best (the patina that develops on brass isn't particularly attractive). The copper Penguin cups actually develop a nice patina.
Bill has posted detailed instructions on how to scrub the insides clean elsewhere - it's great advice. Just make sure you've got plenty of steel wool and a large tub of elbow grease.

I know, it's tough to ask about what cups and balls to get on a magician's forum isn't it?
I own a set of Johnson's and love them. But to answer your original question, its really a matter of personal taste. Do YOU prefer copper or brass? Your audiences won't care and it really won't affect your performance. Many people find the lightweight aluminum to be too light and makes the working a bit harder. But this is generally only after they have become accustomed to higher quality cups. It does help to have a cup that feels "right" to you. But when you get your first cups they usually all feel right because you have nothing to compare it to. Bottom line is that Ricky Jay, Dai Vernon, Mike Ammar, and all the great C&B workers (including I'm sure everyone who has posted replies to your question) could do an excellent performance with the Magic Makers cups or any other cup. I think you are wise investing more in books, DVD's and educational materials than the props when first starting out. Those items will improve everything about your practice and performance and get you to the next level far better and faster than a more expensive cup will. Many of the folks on this forum have already traveled the road you are on and have developed a love for certain cups, many others are also collectors. It's easy (in fact, almost unavoidable) to develop an affinity for a particular cup, and I'm sure you will too over time. But for where you are now almost any decent cup will suffice. It can even be argued that in some instances, not all but some, learning with less desirable props can improve your skills in the long run. Its kind of like learning to cook, the best pots and knives won't make you a great chef, it's your knowledge, skills and experience that will. But better tools do make the job easier. Right now, your limited budget will serve you better by spending it on educational materials and then you can always upgrade your cups down the road, after you have the skills and actually know what you are looking for in a cup. If your only decision right now is between copper and brass then you have a ways to go before you are ready to find the perfect cup for you. Just get a decent set for now and start learning. Either of the sets you mentioned are decent enough so have it. Best of luck, Bill |

I got my set of penquin cups free as a promo item, it was wierd because I was torn between getting them and another item, and when I went to the site I saw the promotion and was able to get them both for one price. if you do get them, make sure to add in the comment box for them to be checked before shipping. mine stack great and look pretty good. (still had to clean out the inside of them, but one wasn't too bad)
