Has anyone here ever busked doing fortune telling and psychic readings? If so, please share you experiences with us. I'm curious about trying this.

I went to a street fair/swap meet in Northern California that had about a dozen "soothing booths" active with various approaches being used. The best one was an old guy with a sign, "Tell what I know -- $2.00, never tell $10.00"
At one of the table a woman did card flourishes between customers, and another did "Fast & Loose" as a demonstration with play money. If they hadn't been so near to a rock band playing they might have done better.

I used to read tarot cards on Jackson Square. I was young and dumb, but it was fun!
I wrote about it here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/searc......=5513817

I've done it a few times, but only at new age fairs. I used to be heavily involved with the tarot scene. I've since backed off from that world. I never felt like I was a charlatan, as I was very keen on the history and symbolic meaning of each card. With that said, my position now is that it is a 'cold reading', and I really should have known better. I won't do it again.
As an amateur magician I was familiar with what a cold reading and a hot reading were. But I thought tarot could be done without that. It was my busking that changed my mind. I noticed that when I simply read what the cards said, there were often raised eyebrows, slight frowns and what-not. Without wanting to, I turned my readings to fit more of the customer's expectations. It is pretty easy to tell when one is laying an egg. I never made that much money. |

One more thing about busking with tarot. When I was doing it, my clients trusted me with personal secrets and heart aches, there were a few times that they would weep. I tried to get them to see situations in a different light and make better decisions. What I was really turning into is a de facto therapist. I'm not qualified to take people's inner-most feelings into my hands and play around with it. It was supreme arrogance on my part to say that I could. A lot of my clients, as well as people I would meet, were real damaged goods. People underestimate the power of fortune telling, and I was taking it as seriously as my clients.
Some of the worst advice I've ever personally gotten was from unscrupulous fortune tellers, my tarot peers. One woman claimed that a dead loved one was talking to her...and that the dead loved one didn't like my wife! I told her straight out that she was mistaken and the loved one would never say something like that. I'm knowledgeable about tarot, even hosting a podcast on the subject for a whole year, but I'm still not sure how the dead could communicate through them like this woman insisted. It is moments like that which leads me to the conclusion that it is all hucksterism and self-delusion. |

Readers are no different from anyone else. There are some that are good at it and do more good than harm. Then there are others who are no good at all.
Kind of like magicians.

I have never busked it, but I did a hen party a few weeks ago and read all the palms at the end of my performance. Most of the women enjoyed the readings for what they were - a bit of fun. But one had serious problems. Luckily it was an area in which I was qualified to offer advice - employment law. So I took her aside, dropped the palm, and laid out the relevant legislation for her, and told her where she needed to go to put things right. I believe she intended to follow my advice, in which case some real good would have come out of the cold reading. I love doing it for festivals and parties, where the organiser is paying me. I just don't like seeing women dip into their own purses for something I know is a con, even if it is a con pulled off with sincerity and respect.
