Michael Messing emailed me about using the Airclick remote with Winamp on a netbook. It turns out that since I last looked at the Airclick, someone wrote a small plugin for the Airclick software to let you configure it the way you want to. This means you can set it up in the same way I describe the setup for the KeyRF on my website.
Note that the Airclick is discontinued at this time, so right now you can find them on ebay for about $10.00US, but who knows how long that will last. Also, the Airclick was a cheaply-made remote and may not last all that long for a busy performer, so while it will work now, I think it could easily die at the wrong time. But here are the instructions anyway. (This is for Windows, I don't use a Mac...sorry!) First, go to Griffin's website and get the 2.0 version of the Airclick driver. http://www.griffintechnology.com/software/ Install the software. Someone came up with a plugin for the Airclick software that will allow you to redefine the keys that the remote sends to any application. Go to this website: http://teknohippy.net/2006/11/02/hacking-airclick-windows/ Search on the page for this link: "Sendkeys.zip" Click the link, download the small file. Unzip it. Then find your Airclick installation and copy "SendKeys.acp" into the "Plugins" folder. (To find your Airclick installation, right-click the "Airclick" icon in the Start menu. Select "Properties." Then click the "Find Target" button. This opens the folder on your hard drive where Airclick is installed. You should see the Plugins folder.) Quit the Airclick software by clicking on the icon in the tray and restart it from the Start menu. Click on the Airclick icon again. You should now see "SendKeys" in the menu. Click that so it's got the checkmark next to it. Now pick up the remote and press both Volume UP and Volume DOWN buttons at the same time. A window should pop up, this is the SendKeys config window. Here's how I've set it up: The Play button on the remote is set to Stop and Fade out, while the Next button on the remote skips to the next track and plays it. (These can be changed, this is just an example. Also, this makes the button on the right side the "Next Track" button and the button on the top left the "Stop and fade out" button.) In the Play/Pause window, type: +V In the Next/FastForward window, type: {DOWN}{ENTER} You can copy and paste these from this post into the SendKeys window if you want. Click OK. You have configured the remote! Test it out... Click the Playlist window in Winamp (make sure you have a few songs loaded), make sure the highlight bar is on the first song, and press the Next track button on the remote. The highlight bar should move down and the next song will play. (Make sure you have "Manual Playlist Advance" checked in the Winamp Preferences, so Winamp will NOT automatically play the next song. To find this in Winamp, press CTRL-P and click "Playlist" on the left.) While a song is playing you can press the Play/Pause button to stop it and have it fade out. Then press the Next/FastForward button to play the next song on the list. Note: Don't click on another window after you start Winamp! That will send the keystrokes to that window instead. Always make sure the Winamp Playlist window is highlighted when you want to do a show! That's it, the Airclick now works the same as my KeyRF setup. Also, I ran into an issue with the Airclick where Winamp stopped responding to it for awhile. A search around the net found other people with the same problem. It turns out that if it's plugged into a USB hub then Windows will turn off the power to save battery life. So don't use a hub with it! Also, to make the font bigger in Winamp's playlist window, hit CTRL-P, click "Playlist" on the left, then for "Playlist font size, in pixels" try some bigger numbers on your screen and see what you think. Jeff,
I messed with sendkeys a while back. You might want to host the acp files for non tech people. Also version 2.0 of the Griffin software directly supports WINAMP. G0THIKE |

Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

G0thike, the direct support of Winamp isn't configurable. So you can't have one-button command where you go to the next track and play it.
Clinton, I don't have a powered USB hub, but that might fix it. |

Update: I've been playing with this some more, even using it as a control for Powerpoint presentations. Honestly, for ten bucks, it's worth it. If you like it, buy a spare.
