If you don't yet have the skill to do as Lawrence O suggests and/or WHENEVER someone tries to hijack a card trick. Throw a "line" at them.
That's not how the directions say to do it When you bring the cards, you can shuffle them any way you want I always loose at mahJong We're not playing mahjong right now but I'll let you have the cards tonight at the midnight show I thought I told you to wait in the car (throw a dollar at them) Here, now go get some ice cream You want to see the cards?... I want to see a hundred dollars (hold out your hand) There is nothing wrong with this deck, I just made it this morning REALLY, Do you think a person with the skill I have needs to make a mess? How much time do you think I have here?... We're on a schedule If I shuffled these cards the way you wanted me to I would forget the order they're in! And a hundred more. Another approach is to have a second pack of cards "ready" and give them the cards. When they start shuffling you look at them and say "Good... while you're shuffling THAT pack... we'll just continue the trick with this other one...... I'll check back with you in a minute" (All done, as if you were helping them) Another approach is to put the pack away and say "Oh you've seen that one before. How about a coin trick?" Then do the card trick later.

Another 'out' to this challenge that I and many others have used is to simply 'sneak' off the selected card as you hand out the deck to be shuffled. From here you can add it back on OR, a favorite of mine...turn your back on them to 'give' them the chance to 'really' mix those suckers up! Now, you can fold the card, place into a regular wallet....sheesh, almost anything you wish for later revelation, etc.
Best,

I agree with the above posters. There is a certain element here that isn't being done, controlling the audience. And as was stated, try not to draw attention to your shuffles.
But that being said, you will get your hecklers, and I LOVE most of the lines Jay mentioned. I'm going to use that "But I made them this morning" line! Most laymen are familiar with two common shuffles. Overhand, and a Riffle/Table shuffle. I'm sure there is a resource somewhere else, but the DVD "Show Off With Cards" has an EXCELLENT tabled riffle shuffle that is entirely false. I use it whenever challenged. As far as being asked for the Mah Jong, I've never gotten that before, I'd make a comment about it being how children shuffle, palm the top and have them do it. Now, if you're looking for more than single card controlling, any of the ideas above sound great to me, particularly handing them a second deck and continuing on without them. Tim Howey |

What about making your magic real magic that it will not occur to people to ask that question? I think funsway makes a good suggestion about changing your work material, it is hard to shuffle a spoon At the end there will be no technique or flourish who will cover this for a layman.
If you be able to give them a magic experience (and there is a lot of information about that in books) no one will raise such question. So if the question will be ask then wonder if you are giving them a puzzle instead of magic. When it is a puzzle they always want to look at your deck or something else. Just wonder.. |
