I really do think this has to be one of the greatest card effects of all time when done properly but I would love to know one thing. Richard has performed this effect hundreds maybe thousands of times.....I have to wonder if he has ever misspelled anyone's name and what would be a good recovery line to use if and when this ever happens? Today it seems even the most common of names (Cathy, Kathy, Kathie) are spelled differently by individuals. Anyone ever given thought to this yet?

I usually make a joke when I first meet them. Like for example
Cathy Kathy I would ask.. hmm is that kathy with a K or a C? They respond: K. You respond: Oh well nice to meet you kathy with a k. Or something like that. |

Not until just now!
That's a good question. What about doing it for people who have uncommon names? What if your doing a table full of people who happen to be.... Polish for example. And all of thier names are Jyatzc or Krystina or Pioter. You would have to come up with something creative or just not do the effect I suppose. Have to give it some thought. V.

V,
After the intro's have been completed....just pray that someone named John or Bob is in the group! All kidding aside, I'm interested in hearing some thoughts on this. Respectfully, Rochaz

You could just do it with the name of the resturant or bar your working in I suppose.
Try to find out someones pets name or thier favorite actor or actress. Of course you would have to come up with some sort of patter to make it fit right. V.

If it's a name that might be difficult to spell, just ask them for their favorite cartoon character. Have them draw that picture on the card, the best they can, and that's the name you print on the back. This was explained elsewhere for when you do it for friends and you know their name. This is what I would do.

If you're performing for a group, make sure you introduce yourself to everyone and get their names. Perform Identity for the person with the simplest name, like Bob.

I think rochaz hit on the easiest solution. When I approach a table or group of tables, I always introduce myself and then go around the table making introductions. There will most likely be SOMEONE with a name it would be safe to spell, although Daston is right, everybody wants to be "unique" today and "mispell" their name. I guess if you get the spelling wrong, you can just say, "I just caused the lines on the back of your card to morph into your name... I am a Magician, I did not win the Spelling Bee when I was in school...", or something along those lines.
Great point Daston... Mr. Sanders, I'm sure you have a few stories along these lines. Maybe you can share them with all of us who bought "Identity" and give us some advice for when this happens. Thanks, Hank |

If there name is Montgomery or something just write "Bob". When they wonder what the heck is going on just say, "Bob is short for Montgomery in Minneapolis" or wherever you're from.

This actually happened when Richard Lectured here in Holland six months ago. Technically, he was performing named, because Identity wasn't out at the time.
He spelled the guys name wrong, but it didn't do very much to the reactions, albeit it was a room of magicians he performed for. |

I've performed Named about 50 times and this has happened to me I think twice. At first it bothered me but then I realized that it doesn't really matter because the effect of the permanent marks moving is still the same. In any event, after the first time it happened, I came up with a different patter line that I still use. I focus on the marker from the beginning and do the old "did you ever wonder why these are called magic markers" line. If all goes well and I spell the name correctly, no bid deal. But if I spell it incorrectly, I pause and then conclude by saying, "I told you this marker can perform magic. I didn't tell you he could spell. He's still working on that." It's pretty much a blow off but it got a good reaction the one time I had to use the line.
But as someone above said, most of the spectators didn't even care about the misspelling and almost immediately went back to talking about how the lines moved. |

I received an interesting reply from Richard on this topic. I have to say it is the best I've heard so far. Thanks for the reply Richard...it almost makes me want to misspell on purpose (just kidding).... but here is his reply for anyone interested....
Hi Daston, I have been away from the Café recently, so sorry for the delay. Of course, the best thing to do is to choose someone with a name that you can easily spell. In the unlikely event that you are in a situation where you just discovered that you misspelled their name...I say,"apparently the spirits need a spell check!" This gets a good laugh, which immediately eliminates any possible tension. Here's the funny part, they don't care that much. The fact that the lines even came close to their name is enough to blow them away I guess...and then with the addition of the line that I gave you...it makes everything make sense and keeps it fun. So, I hope that helps. Best Regards, Richard |
