For the last four years I have done an event at a hotel during the Summer. This has been a buffet style event with close-up magic. I have developed a good relationship with the hotel and I do get some extra gigs throughout the year through this particular hotel. However, I have lost my passion for the summer event despite being asked to do it again this year. I said that I would do it this year but I would do a stand up show and would only perform close up magic at tables that request it.
Each year, new guests come to the event, but many are repeat customers. And, after four years I am basically out of new material to show them. I thought that if I did a stand up show it would be a way to bring something new and fresh to the event for people that have been before. I was not interested in doing this event again if it was only to be a close up magic gig, because I don't feel that I can bring anything new to make it a success. The money is important, but doing a good job and making sure guests enjoy themselves is also very important to me. Well, I agreed to do it but they also made me drop my price, each year I have conceeded to a small discount because they also bring in other gigs for me. This year, a different staff memeber was going to be in charge of the event from the last two years and I was told that I would be contacted by this person. After not having heard from this person, I approached them and told them that I want a meeting to workout the specifics of the event as this time I would require a small stage etc. When I contacted the person in charge, he mailed me and attached the flyer for the event. The flyer specifically advertises close-up magic and they used a picture of me from 5 years ago. I am very unhappy about this and made it clear that I was not happy with them using that photo without consulting with me and the content of the flyer is different from what I agreed to, so this year I told them that unfortunately I would have to cancel. The flyer was done up without consulting me and there was no meeting to discuss the event. They are responsible. Because we have established a good relationship I think they just thought that they could do anything and I would be fine with it. Previous years, we have usually had some kind of meeting. Of course, the hotel now is begging me to reconsider. I told them that I could do the event if the flyer is redone, but they said that they cannot do that. I offered to introduce other magicians to do the gig. And, although they are happy for me to let other magicians fill in for me on days that I cannot make it, as the flyer has my photo on it etc, some guests will come expecting to see me. What do I do? If I agree to do it then, next year I am guessing they won't ask me to do it again, which is not really fair. They are responsible for not consulting me about the flyer etc before going to the printer. So, if I agree to do it I feel that I will be the only person compromising and agreeing to terms that I am not happy with. It would be a real shame for my relationship with this hotel to be ruined because of this but on the other hand I don't really want to be taken advantage of either. BTW, each year a contract is signed for the event but I am yet to receive the contract yet for this year's event. The event is due to start in three weeks too. Any advice out there on how I should handle this? Thanks AM

I would still do the event. Otherwise you are almost guaranteed to wreck that relationship. But I would guess that as long as YOU are the one who shows up (since your pic is on the flyer), they would be flexible to allow you to do stand up with only a little close up. It was a new person in charge, and they didn't handle it well, but give them a break - remember we were all new at one point and had to learn as we went. You could be their hero by coming through for them, I'd make the most of it if I were you. Good luck!
