A friend of mine told me she was at a restaurant and was blown away by an effect where the magician doing walk around was blowing soap bubbles, and then turned one into a real glass ball...the part that caught her off guard was she saw him blow the bubble and then it never left her sight before turning into glass.
Does anyone have information on this? It sounds beautiful and I'm wondering if something like this exists or if she'd just had one too many cocktails and didn't notice a switch of some kind?

This was part of the great Vito Lupo act in the late 70's and 80's. He had a black and white Harlequin costume and did a mime act. Had bubbles coming from a tip-over box and then did the bubble to ball routine.

He also has a routine where you blow a bubble, bounce it on a fingerless glove, and then make it real. I believe Mirko does this as well.

Vito was the first American act to win FISM.

The handling on this is super easy and really gets people's attention. I used to use it table hopping quite a bit. I would ask people what their favorite toy was when they were a kid. Not matter what they said, I would say that mine were bubbles. I would often have another bottle the same size as the ones in the trick and offer it to the spectator so they could play along. I would make a comment to the effect of how it made sad that the bubbles would pop and go away. As I said this, I was reaching out for one of the bubbles the spec blew. I would "catch" it and then let it fall to the table and say "sometimes, I was able to save one for later".
From there, you can put it away or you can do a few basic ball sleights if you like. All in all, not a bad little effect and it's not very expensive.

The very low cost of this is what's made me skeptical...10 or 15 bucks it seems...perhaps I'm over-thinking it all?

Andrewzuber,
I've used this for years. Done well, this is a very powerful trick, and laymen remember it forever. DO NOT buy the marketed versions. Waste of money on a gimmick when you need none. Get a crystal ball at least 50mm, so it's larger than the bubble bottle. This is also an easy to blow size. Spend a few bucks and get a real crystal ball, and not a plexi imitation. If you do this close-up, it really makes a better impression. Use sleight of hand and common sense. If you need more info, send me a PM. ~michael

Michael,
Believe it or not, YOU may have been the magician my friend saw perform this, as she is from Birmingham. Wouldn't that be strange?

Funny! Very possible, as I worked bars and restaurants around here for about 20 years. Ask her if she remembers the name of the restaurant, or any description of it.

Yep, on Valleydale Road at Caldwell Mill Road! I worked there for about 3 years. The owner has since retired and there is another restaurant in that location.
Tell your friend I said thanks for remembering! ~michael

That just proves Michael's point
Andrew, don't let the price of the effect throw you off. Michael is right these are very easy to make indeed if you can find the right stuff.

Small world! It's funny how stuff like this can create memories for the spectators. She's a tough one to please so obviously Michael was doing something right!
