I've been thinking lately about how I should be selling my show and image and I notice that many laymen catch on to slogans and lables like mind freak, sleight of hand artist, street magic, etc. Does anyone find that labeling yourself more than just a magician improves business?
When I see someone labled as just a magician it almost creates a question in my mind as to why type of a performer they are. I think laymen might think along the same lines but in the form of, "Oh I hope this isn't another lame magician." Now if they played up their style of magic they might be more inclined to watch or hire that magician. |

One of my mentors, Bill Brewe, once told me:
"If you're doing a straight magic show, call yourself a magician; if you're doing anything else, call yourself anything else but."

I have never been impressed by Angel or Blaine but I think both of them were brilliant to leave behind the 'magician' moniker.
Mind Freak communicates the energy and chaos of rock and roll. Blaine has said he wanted to create the image of a mystic, walking the world like David Caridine's character in 'Kung Fu'. Much more interesting to the General Public then a guy in a tux who does birthday parties. Don't forget Penn and Teller who used to bill themselves as "“a couple of eccentric guys who have learned how to do a few cool things.†They avoided the term magic completely when they started. |
