I would like to find some good, inexpensive balls for manipulating. What I have found that I really like are silicone juggling balls and Fakini balls, but they are quite expensive. Are there any other balls that I could buy that are not as expencive, but that are comparable to these balls?

Hi,
There's an excellent set which consists of 3 balls and a shell, which are silver in colour, but with a textured surface that seems an ideal starting point. They're called "Vernet Multiplication of Balls" and are probably available from most magic dealers. Best wishes, Brian

There're many kinds of multiplying balls available that are much cheaper than Fakini's. There're those yellow rubber golf balls or red wooden ones. I've got a set of Vernet balls as Magictrickster mentioned, they are shiny silver coated with rough jagged edges for better gripping. However I feel they lack the feel and weight for easy handling. If you are really interested in ball manipulations, I strongly suggest the Fakini Multiplying balls. You'll love the feel of them instantly. Meet up with some of your local magicians and check if they have a set so you can borrow them and see for yourself. If money is really the burning issue then get the Vernet balls. They are reasonably good too.

I would suggest getting some cheap balls from you local dealer, and just playing around with them for a while. Get the feel of them, and maybe even perform with them. Then, if you really think you are going to stick with it, suck it up and get the Fakinis.

I have 1.75" rubber manipulation balls that I sold in my shop. I still have some left: blue, green, red, pink, and orange (I may have yellow as well). No shell, but they are great for manipulation. Email me if you are interested.

Well, here are some of my recommendations.
If you want to get something that is catchy to the audience's eye on stage, get Vernet Manipulation Balls. Those that are in silver with a tiny small spike are good, and have a nice grip. If you want to get something that is cheap and has a good grip on the ball, get "Empire" brand manipulation balls. The appearance of the ball looks like a golf ball, it is made of rubber and it is in yellow color. Available only in 1 1/2 inch, if I am not wrong. Lastly, if you want to invest in something that is real good, I highly recommend Fakini's manipulation balls. They are the best manipulation ball of all in the market. I hope this information will help you out. Symmatrix

Here's my two cents worth. I agree with everyone on the Fakini Billiard Balls. They are absolutely the best. Of course when I first started, I went to Wal-Mart and bought some superballs of various sizes. Then I purchased my first set of Fakini's. Once you do that, you won't want to use anything else.

Hi
I use the Vernet Multiplying balls in my act. They are available from http://www.brtmagic.co.uk and are fairly well priced. Hope this helps, TM, http://www.robert-temple.co.uk |

How about ping pong balls?
I think this is the cheapest way. Use three of the 38mm diameter and half of 40mm (new international size). And I prefer orange than white. Or you can paint it to whatever color you like. Regards, |

Ping pong balls have poor grip. Maybe if you dipped them in liquid latex and allowed them to dry, you would get a thin layer of latex around the ping pong, giving it good grip.
You can push a ping pong ball into a 260 modelling balloon and break it, leaving the ping pong inside with a tight layer of balloon around it. Check out 'Inflation' to find out more info! |

Kevin:
That is a nice idea but much to much work. I have found that using superballs that are size 1 3/4 inch work great. The best part about it is that you can find these at almost any toy store or places like Oriental Trading Company. They are very cheap and have almost the exact same feel as a Fakini ball. They also have a great grip and the size matches the 1 3/4 inch fakinis at a fraction of the cost involved. Granted you can't get a shell from this, but these are a great cheap way to practice billard ball moves and slieghts with almost no cost to you. Also, because they come in a variety of colors, you can do color change moves as well. Then once you have practiced and know you want to do billard balls in your act, then you can invest in a Fakini set. I would really stay away from the Vernet sets. They are hard on the fingers and do not handle right for some of the better roll down moves. Also, if you drop them they crack and they do not bounce like a good Fakini does. Hope this helps.

Great advise Kyle. I have always played around with billards for manipulation but not until now I am really interested in buying a good quality set.

I found some great super balls in a toy store a couple of years ago that I still use in my act. They are made to look like big diamonds, so they are not actualy round like a ball, but they work great.

I agree with Kyle, don't waste your money on Vernet. They are too light and do not grip even though they have the little spikes. It's one of those items that sit in my closet shelf.
I wonder if you had a mold and used some silicon bathroom caulk, if you could make your own.... hmmm |
