My daughter graduated from 8th grade last night. I think this started in my area because at one time it was quite an accomplishment to graduate from 8th grade. The point is, this was as serious to the kids as a high school graduation.
Still, we had (by my count) no less than 11 guys (adults, not students) who showed up thinking it was a ball game instead of a graduation (they had on ball hats). Three guys, must have thought they were going to a rodeo (cowboy hats). All the hats stayed on during the ceremony. One idiot showed up in a tie-dyed tank top, shorts and sandalls. Numerous others showed up in their favorite ball team jersies. Two jerks answered their cell phones and had conversations during the ceremony. I really wanted to take these idiots outside one by one and discuss the best and most unique applications for a two by four with them. My wife convinced me that a headline in today's newspaper such as "Magician Arrested for Assault" would not do my carreer any good (despite my objections that any press is good press and that any judge would rule my actions justifiable). All the graduates (95 of them)were nicely dressed (with the one exception of a kid in shorts and a t-shirt proclaiming his fandom for some rock band), with most of the guys in dress shirts and most of the girls in long dresses. I just had to vent my frustrations. You may resume your journey into magic now. |

Sometimes, people just $%%$.
The really sad part is that your 2 x 4 solution would only make you feel better - the idiots would go on undaunted, perhaps even more idiotic than before. |

You would have been told...
"..things are different since your days" as if we lived a hundred years ago, and they seem to think manners don't count these days. I feel a bit sorry for the youngsters today they think they are trendy and having a good time and don't realize just how stupid and immature they look. Howard..(sad old geezer) |

Sorry your sensibilities were offended. A report like yours was in the paper over two hundred years ago about some guy who dared to wear a pink vest, and so it goes.

I can't believe you would even think of putting a 2 x 4 through that. Have you no respect for lumber, man?
On a more serious note, I can see your passion for the subject and your reasoning of it. I suspect you are not the only one attending who felt that way. Perhaps a voicing of your opinion to the Principal in a way that suggests at least a business casual attire be announced, would benefit future graduations. All in all. I'll bet you were proud of her! |

Things have gone way over the edge.... Way back in my days! I can't believe I even say..or..spoke that, but it's true.
I feel for you, Jon I really do, the sad part is that they won't even realize what they've missed until they're older. Sad...... so sad......
There is nothing that remains so constant as change. Don't end up like concrete, all mixed up and permanently set.

Over the edge...
Okay, what have you found out when you asked junior high students about what they expect from high school? what have you found when you looked at the norms for behavior today among students in high school? For those who don't know, it's amazing to find out the perspective of those inside the situation. Getting opinions from self involved non-participants is a sport much like backseat driving and usually alienates those involved from those who would involve themselves. Take the hint and ask THEM some questions.

I miss 8th grade. I got in trouble the least that year. Although, that doesn't say much, I was always skipping.

I just want to clarify here...
It was the PARENTS and INVITED GUESTS, not the students who were poorly dressed and acting like idiots. The kids were exemplary in their dress and behavior. I used to teach high school, so I've seen attitudes that range from the "I don't give a rat's hind leg" to "this is my only chance at school and I'm not gonna blow it." But that's another subject altogether. |

Yeah, In high school I buckled down. I figured that if I don't want to flip burgers for a living. I'm gonna need a good education.

I go to a private High school.
During my 8th grade graduation I performed the zombie. It was my first stage magic experience and I learned so much from that. Now in High school, I have a sour taste in my mouth from what I am surrounded by. So much Pot, alcohol, and don'tgivacrapism.
