Many of you would have never guessed (or cared) that I'm a World Champion Singer. I a 3 Time Gold Medalist Tenor with an A Capella Chorus. That and a buck won't get me a gallon of gas. I know of many Top Flight Magicians who have won very notable awards in the Magic Community who couldn't entertain a fly if their life depended on it. Technically Skilled...yes! Entertaining? NO! I don't say this to insult you b/c that's not my intention. I say so you can put yourself in check. My point here is that from what you just posted, your main expereince is working behind the counter of a Magic Shop along with doing a few shows here and there and winning Magic Convention Awards. In my opinion, that makes you a very competent demonstrater of magic...but in no way makes you a good "performer/entertainer." Are you? I don't know. Only you and your audiences can answer that question. Here's my beef. In your original post you state: Quote:
For me, if someone has been around as long as you say you have, worked in a Magic Shop as long as you claim, booked the occassinal show, etc., etc., then WHY are you asking such a question? Why is someone who's been around for so long having trouble with deciding how much money he should book for a show and what material to perform. In my opinion, you're not ready and you should refer this gig to someone with more experience. Working the counter at a Magic Shop for 7 Years doesn't qualify you to be ready to go for 4 hours for a big company gig...unless they have a retail magic counter that needs to be worked. Again...I'm not trying to insult you here. Just curious...

I too found it odd that he had all this experience but wasn't sure about how much to charge, but I have to disagree with the passing the gig along. It's only $250 and he doesn't seem to have experience with this kind of thing so why not take it? He obviously is adequate enough with magic to get through the gig without messing up and he was obviously reccomended because someone was entertained at what he did before. I say take it and learn from it.
p.s. I wouldn't know how to even start entertaining a fly.

I got to say that I have seen lots of skilled magicians that r not very entertaining. but I have always been a showman and very entertaining. the time I spent I Las Vegas helped with my skill ALOT. I have lots of confidence in my act, but when I performed all those shows they were usually book through Houdini's magic shop corporate office, and when I asked how much I was going to get paid the boss always said, "don't worry about it, I will take care of you" and I always did it anyways just for the experiance. plus I am very lazy at advertising myself, all my shows have been through word of mouth,i have always otherwise charged $75 an hour for walk arounds. I just never did one for 4 hours, I have done lots of company party stand-up magic shows for and hour but never a walk around.

I'm liking Christopher Lyle more and more as I read his posts. I disagree sometimes... but I respect where he's coming from nonetheless. And he's right on the money here.
Jack of Hearts, Do what you want. I've never really cared about what the people on "the forums" say. If it makes you happy and you feel good about it, then great. But the fact that your posting such a (forgive me) NEWBIE question tells me that you don't really know whats going on. $250 for 4 hours is "well below" the market rate. If your experience is "well below" that of a full-time pro... then this price may be a good fit for you and you should jump at it. Don't let anyone tell you what to charge. Just know that in Los Angeles, most typical, non-famous Magic Castle regulars charge between $400 and $750 per HOUR for strolling. I'm not telling you to charge this. I'm just telling you the REALITY in Los Angeles. YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY. joe |

My recommendation is NOT doing this gig. If you are a Extremely newbie in the strolling business, maybe you don't give the impression that you could do with more experience. I said this because you use the name : Big Company.
Anyway answering your questions: "I have no idea how much I should charge" : Add your expenses ( Gas , Food etc) and charge your regular rate...why? With this gig are you entering a new market, and you are polishing on that arena PLEASE DON LET THE CLIENT KNOW THIS! "how many tricks do I need" : All the stuff that you know WELL! Don't practice with and audience! "Is it OK if I repeat some tricks?" YES! Not for the same people of course! All my best wishes on your job, Hansel!

I'm moving to LA. If I don't do anything else, I'm moving to LA.
Anyways, I say do the show and learn from it, just like a few others have previously said. The company doesn't seem like they are willing to hire someone with a lot of experience anyway, offering #$250 for 4 hours. I'd personally take it if you were just getting started.

Just so we do not have an immediate rush of magic dudes (and dudettes) hopping on a train to head west, everyone should keep in mind that with enormous California taxes (thanks Arnie), horrendous commute time, high insurance rates, extreme competition, complete market saturation, and clients with out of this world expectations, the net rate in the LA market is really about $23.75 to $38.50 per hour. That is given of course that you are charging what Joe S. mentioned - $450 to $700 per hour.
As a new Café member I had to at least let all who might want to venture out west get a realistic idea of the going NET rates. The grass is not that different! The serious threads above answered well the original post I just wanted to add some levity...and get my posting numbers up. ---48 to go!! woo hoo!
