Here's an idea some of you might like to use yourself.
I had to write up my own instructions for the worm because the first batch I bought was in bulk and there weren't any instructions that came with them. The instructions I wrote up were decent, but I thought, why not shoot a little tutorial and put it up on you tube? It's easy to do, it's free, you only have to do it once and it really might help sales. (I just shot it again though because I really looked like crap when I shot the first one, I think I just woke up from a nap). Anyway, I think this might add some value to the worm in the mind of the buyer. It might help them buy if they're afraid they won't be able to do the same tricks you're doing. At the end of my pitch, I tell the crowd that I have a tutorial on you tube where I personally teach how to all of the cool tricks that I do with Mr. Squiggly, so they can learn how easy it is to do them too. In my instructions it tells them how to find the clip by searching for "Show Me Glenn" on youtube. I chose this obscure title so the clip wouldn't show up when people searched for "squirmels" and the like. I tell them... "It's the next best thing to bringing me home for private lessons! In fact it's better because they can watch as many times as they want, plus... they don't have to feed me!" I can tell you that I have heard people say on several occasions ... "ya, you make him look good but I won't be able to do it like you" then I say, Yes you can, bla bla bla. Anyway, here is the link if you'd like to check it out... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STJxT0zRFXI Glenn

You know what.... It's BRILLANT!! Who doesn't have access to YouTube nowadays.
And I think you can even exclude your video from the searches. This way, you can put your youtube URL in the instructions and nobody will have access to the video without the adress. I'm glad I haven't printed too much Svengali instructions for the first batch, I'll be able to make the change without too much fuss. Thanks for the idea. I dig it! -Louis-P |

Thanks Louis.
I thought about adding in the URL, but I figured it would be easier for them to just search for "Show Me Glenn" instead. I purposely made no reference to the fuzzle, squirmle etc. so I don't think to many people will stumble across it. I think It's probably better to have your own tutorial up because then you can tell the people who buy from you that you have a video on you tube where you'll personally teach them how to set up and train their own Mr. Squiggly. However, if any of you would rather just direct them to my tutorial, feel free to use it. Just tell them that your friend Glenn has a video up on you tube etc. I'll leave the clip up forever, so you won't have to worry about directing people to a clip that is no longer available. Glenn

Hmmmmm... You haven't had anyone contact you through your YouTube account asking for their money back? |

I'm curious, why do you think people would want their money back after seeing the clip? I'm just helping them get the most out of the toy they bought from me.
They do get written instructions in the package that they could open right away... and many do. The video just augments the written instructions. But to answer your question, no, I haven't had any negative ramifications as a result of the video. On the contrary, I have had people say they're glad they'll be able to learn to make their Mr. Squiggly do the same tricks that mine does. Glenn

Why would someone ask for a refund?
1. A Squirmel is essentially just a piece of colored fuzz on a string. 2. A "NO REFUNDS... You're buying the secret" sign doesn't always work with kids or laymen. All the pitchmen I know don't give out personal contact information to customers. |

True, the materials used aren't worth very much, but I think in the final analysis people buy because of the tricks the squirmle can do. They see my little demo and decide they would like to buy one.
I may be wrong... I've been wrong before, (just ask any woman I've ever lived with) but I think their frustration would more likely come from a lack of good instructions and their inability to make the worm move and do the tricks they saw me do. By the way, I do have the comments and ratings disabled for the tutorial, but that's not to say I couldn't be sent a private message. I personally don't have a no refunds sign posted myself. I primarily use the worm to stop people and build a tip so I can pitch the deck. I just play with him and have some fun, then I put him away. I don't feel like I misrepresent it in any way, as I said before, I'm just trying to help them have as much fun as they can with it. So, anyway, so far so good. I'll let you know if any problems arise. Glenn

They look at you as you manipulate the worm and as you start pitching they stop to see what else the worm can do. People will want to buy it by seeing that. The mistake I made was downplaying the worm when I pitched the deck instead of doing the complete package as noted by Don. Glenn, what is your approach? How much are you pitching the worm for? Do you do the package as on Don's DVD? Nice video and moves you have their are pretty good.

If they ask for their money back you give it to them. That's it. But you sure don't post a sign talking about refunds...why put the thought in their head?
If you don't give the refund they might well go to the office of the flea market and complain you ripped them off. You then lose your spot. Babble about buying a secret won't hold here. |

Although, I do think a no refunds sign is a good idea. I think people understand. We as magicians may not believe so, but to laypeople a Svengali deck or a magic worm is special. They're buying not only a special piece of apparatus but also a magical secret. Think about it through the laypersons point of view. If you have your sign up and decide that you will accept a refund on a certain occasion then you go from the jerk that sold me a piece of fuz on a string to the guy that made an exception for me. Any way you go you don't want the person to leave your pitch angry because anger spreads like wildfire. And fire burns. Have a day! Humbly Shane |

I do have a "no refund" sign, but it doesn't say exactly that; it says "Choose Carefully, All Sales Are Final," and explains that you are buying a secret, etc. It's a little more positive spin than "No Refunds."
If someone wants a refund and hasn't broken open the package (so it's resellable), I'll refund their money. In about half the cases where the buyer has opened the package, I will still give a refund if they are reasonably nice about it and it's something besides "I didn't like it." I always ask why they want a refund; sometimes I have been able to avoid a refund because they just couldn't figure out how to handle the deck, do the Paddle Move, tie the worm, and so forth. (This is another reason why it's very important to have good written instructions to go with the tricks.) Conversely, if I smell trouble and a big beef, I will also do a refund because it's not worth the time and trouble to argue about it. I could sell a dozen more decks/worms in the time it would take me to try and save one sale (and most of the time the people are just crazy and you couldn't save it anyway). But over the course of four years, I have only done maybe about a dozen refunds, and of those, only 2 or 3 were the "big beef" variety -- and that's after selling several grosses of Svengali decks and thousands of Magic Worms. Since the problem doesn't come up very often, I really don't worry about it all that much. SETH

The video is a good idea, the worms I get come with a link in the instructions.
My biggest money maker is my "Float This" DVD that has one of my websites on it. I gurantee the product and tell them my website is listed on it and it makes people fell safer buying from me. When ever I complete a sale I make the person promise that they will practice and keep it a secret, shake their hands and look them in the eye. I have .01% return rate. For the worm, if it is not too busy, I'll tip it real quick and show them how it works. I'll be at the Washington County fair in Utah this week, and getting ready for the big Cal Expo next week. |
