In this day and age of get it quick magic, from instant downloads to PDF books. Today's new magician has access to effects that before we only found in books and took the magician on a trek to search them out. By logging into many magic websites or even a search of youtube will bring you closer to the trick you desire. On you tube, you can see magicians take a classic move like the double life and butcher it a thousand ways, or even show the world what a pass should not look like. Sites such as Ellusionest promise the new magician, wonders beyond their imagination and speak of how you will be doing magic in mere moments, When in truth it takes more then just knowing the trick to be a magician. I can cook a burger on the grill but that does not make me a 4 star chef. Myself along with many other magicians practice for years working out kinks and problems with a move or an effect. Just to see some kid on You tube do it so bad that it exposes the effect( If I see one more gecko vanish where the persons arm looks like a zombie in rigormortis I am going to go postal) Now the odds of someone seeing that video and then seeing me is rare. The fact is they see the bad magic and it ruins the moment for them. The magic moment that you get when you see an effect, that moment of childhood enjoyment.
For one example I do a few passes with cards but even after years of doing it, I do not do it very often in a closeup routine. I know it looks good, but it could look better. The I see other magicians who TRY to do a pass and it looks lie a woman giving birth ( aka messy ) so here we have DVDs that promise get magic quick schemes and showing you moves that are well beyond your ability. Magic is more then that trick you just bought on DVD, its about your character, your presentation. Take for example the Losander floating table, I watched a few videos on you tube where a guy floated it for 10 mins...yes 10 mins...over and over, the table went up down up down up down..then around and around then up down up down. This is such a great effect but the trick is not the table its the presentation...the workings are so easy that you can focus on presentation. My full floating table routine takes 3 mins at most that's with an audience member coming to help as well. When you look at buying a magic trick, don't buy it because it is cool or the NEW thing, buy it because you fit the trick. Your personality fits the style. I do comedy in my show, so me doing a Ouija board would not fit, though their are some cool effects with them. in Closing, stop killing magic for people because you can't spend the time to practice. Not only are you hurting yourself but you are hurting the spectator from enjoying true magic. Michael Graves misfitsofmagic.com |

I agree a far as you go. Some eBooks and DVD's offer a variety of effects and it is impossible for the seeker to be able to judge whether the trick is right for them (fit the trick). Additionally, some of my innovations have come from trying to make some *(%%#@ trick work as described. I make it work, and later discover I have created a new sleight.
This is why I ahve started a ShareGiver program for many of my eBook, and have tried to interest other creaters to do the same. For mine, you risk nothin up front except a commitment to feedback, good or bad so that I can prodcue better eBooks. Then you can get another. Of course, if you are able to use the material to advange you might send me something to keep my creative juices flowing. This is no different from ShareWare in the 90's. I guess I am really an innovation busker, learning from crowd reactions and pleased with tips whne the appear in the hat. The point is that there is a solution. You just have to let other eBook perveyors know of your wishes. Then also be prepared to 'educate' other magicians not to abuse the ShareBook system. What a concept! Only pay what an effect is worth to you -- something the seller cannot possibly guess.

I agree as well, with your statement of E boosk and DVDs. There are quite a few though that promise quick and easy and 1 effect on the DVD..what new magicians lose is the knowledge of psychology and other aspects of what make a effect work.
I love your Idea and would love to read some of your work. We have all bought effects that we should not have or found a dvd we thought would be good and was not. I would recommend the card magician the complete Card College and also Tarbel course in magic. For psychology look up the book of wonder by Tommy Wonder Michael Graves misfitsofmagic.com |

Hi Guys,
This is a really interesting subject. As Eugene Burger said, if you more then a year in magic STOP buying magic tricks. You already know to much tricks wich probally the most of them do not fit you. I've been in magic for more then ten years. Just a couple a months ago I discover the magic in books. Not the tricks but everything around like stagemanagement, propmanagement etc. It was my qustion about misdirection (Gary Kurtz) who introduce me to the world of books. But then again you must watch out to do not the same as with buying tricks, just buying books and books. I was always a big fan of sharing, but in the magic community (in Holland) there is a lot of stealing. Now I know again it is all about your presentation and you are unique. Just to find out what your fit can be a long way. And than again a lot of our collegae will never found it. There is so much creativity flowing when you are getting deeper in your repetoire and there is the real magic. I read something, a amateur is doing a lot of different magic tricks for the same people where a pro do a lot of the same magic tricks for different people. Excellent! Nice to share the same feelings and thoughts! My best, Ronald |

I have always loved the creative side of magic over the actual presentation. As I have become more "less than able" physically to perform many sleights I 'ustacould' I have innovated new ways of achieving the desired result. For example, if an effect requires a Classic Palm that I can no longer do, I find an alternative method -- and find that I have created a new sleight -- at least one friends have never seen published.
The point is that while you not have to constantly seek new 'tricks' -- especially the packaged kind, you may need new ways of turning tricks into 'effects', and effects into 'routines'. Visit my website and pick out an Ebook to explore. No Charge - No Risk up front -- just a commitment to give feedback. "Finding a fit" can come from either trying every hat in the store or getting a haircut -- or deciding not to wear a hat at all. Life is about making choices. I hope that I make the choices easier. Mostly what I see is egoic questions of, "Do I look good in this hat? Will it make me successful?" When I tell them that brushing their teeth will get them more dates than choosing a hat ...
