If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Funny thing in the U.S. is its better to kill (usually) then deal drugs or in this case, commit a crime against a Casino. You do more time (usually) for drug offenses and in this case, a casino crime. Lets not even talk about Enron and countless others who ruined the lives of many thousands of civilians with stock frauds, scandles and pure greed. Get caught with an ounce of dope and you got a bigger problem then these Enron type cats and the many other white collar scammers out there contributing to political parties etc.Personal note....I have an aquaintance who served 7 years and released in good standing and all who know him, work with him or for him or live by him would never know he did a double homicide.

I would postulate that things like murder, rape, common theft, assault, and other crimes that don't directly impact the States ability to extract huge taxes, also don't get as heavily punished as crimes that are essentially a direct attack on a given States tax base.
Gambling, in those States that encourage and allow it, is a huge source of tax revenue. Punishing those who choose to attack that tax base (in this case by cheating) to the maximum extent of the law seems to be a solid trend as opposed to a one off occurrence. Nevada has for years attached severe penalties for cheating, all we're seeing now is some of these Eastern gambling States catching up to the same level of punishment that Nevada has had for decades now. |

True. Nevada is a prime example, mess with Nevada and get caught and its automatic serious serious sentencing guidelines.

"Several Foxwoods dealers testified to allowing late bets at the craps table for Taylor or others who prosecutors said were Taylor’s associates. The fast-moving game of craps relies on dealers to take bets before the dice are thrown. Dealers said they used code words “hot chocolate” or “strawberry daiquiri” to identify cheating players. They later were paid a cut of their winnings."

The Magic of David Copperfield
A 23-year-old Utah resident running a brash scam that bilked investors out of over $4 million by promising them shares of a Internet and casino gaming company. Robert Robb of Orem, Utah, falsely claimed that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer offered him $50 million, that magician David Copperfield had participated in a Las Vegas launch of the multiplayer gaming terminals, and that Mirage Resorts had licensed the systems. Plead guilty got 27 months in prison. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20020715/0139228.shtml

I know of a guy that set up and executed a Ponzi scheme, bilked seniors out of millions, ruined the careers of unknowing salesmen (the investment WAS legit in the beginning) and did 3 years in a Club Fed then got out and lived happily ever after on the money he had stashed in off shore accounts and coffee cans!

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |
