BTW, why did you even watch the LOTR movies? I didn't. I first read Tolkien over thirty years ago, and those absolutely fantastic images in my mind...well, why would I want to challenge, replace, or destroy them.
I haven't seen the movies, and will not ever do so. |

^Fair Point I suppose.^
I do love movies though. As well as books. It was natural for me to want to see the movies. And I did like them. V.

Of the Larry McMurtry books Lonesome Dove is the only one I haven't read but love the movie! I wore out my VHS copy and now have LD on DVD. Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones were perfect for their rolls IMO but the sequels and prequels lacked in those 2 characters (James Garner was ok as Capt Call) until the last movie "Comanche Moon" where Gus was played by Steve Zann (sp?)! You could tell Steve studied Lonesome Dove and had Duvall's mannerism and inflection down pat! Jon Voight (sp?) was a HORRIBLE Capt. Call in the TV movie "Return to Lonesome Dove" IMO!
The movie "Master of the Game" with Diane Cannon based on the Sidney Sheldon book of the same name is another fave of mine! |

I believe Reiner actually improved the pacing of the book, and I'd thought the book was excellent. Favorite book made into LEAST favorite movie would have to be Kubrick's take on Stephen King's "The Shining!" King tells the story that, during shooting, Kubrick called him up and asked; "Do you believe in the basic goodness of man?" King said of course he did, didn't everyone, and Kubrick responded; "I don't."

Wow thanks to all posters on this
from the top............... scott, around the world, better book hated the chan/coogan version. doug, by far the best post ever, I am currently writing a book about a dead body, no not a necropheiliac. (sp?) its really good fun, more than I expected. sixten not read the book saw the film liked it but hated the bruce willis one. kcg5, agree with most of your comments but aint read all the books 2001 was a better book imo as clarke was far more descriptive about the concept of the tool advancement and its effect on the human race which wasnt pulled off in the film but yes, kubrick worked some magic on it (his films are by far the best especially the eerie ones, I like it, I like it. cukoos nest is a great film, heard the book was better, isn't it funny how some authors really grip you and others cant hold your attention even if its a good story? magnus, cant believe you didn't like lotr. I thinks the movies were almost as acurate as you could get without the amatureish on-and-on drone tolkein delivers. I though your point of characters was a wee bit off. no offence. stoney, thanks for the drink buddy, quite amusing!! kubrick was really something, I agree, his take of the shining (imo) was better than kings but not quite of clarkes (2001) full metal jacket and clockwork orange (the old in-out) were both great films but not read the books. other great books (by king) the body, it, the running man and tommyknockers loved stand by me (the body) didn't really like the films. keep posting your faves. much love |

Just a curious point about 2001. The book came out three months after the movie was released. Clarke wrote the book based on the screenplay (which he also wrote, but with Kubrick).

I've not read all the answers but I have yet to find a movie better than the book and I try to avoid seeing a movie before reading the book.

Full metal jacket and clockwork orange (the old in-out) were both great films but not read the books.
[/quote] Full metal jacket was loosely based on the book, the short timers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Short-Timers) but again, Kubrick made it one of a kind
