With the economy in the state it's in and newspapers folding around the country, how are magic magazines doing? Subscriptions/sales up? Down? Are they in danger of folding? Things have never been better?

I have no idea, but don’t you think the vast amount of information on the internet these days would have more to do with declining sales of magazines? It’s the same with magic catalogs. I used to sit and look at them for hours. Now, I just sit and Google.

I've touched on this during my monthly chats with both Stan Allen of Magic & Richard Kaufman of Genii. The answer seems to differ depending upon who you ask. Richard has indicated that they need more subscriptions and points to the number of publications closing or merging in the traditional media. He has never specifically stated that sales were down, but he's put together some very creative promotions to incentivize subscribing. Stan has always stated that all's well, but we can always use new subscribers. Magic has cut costs though by changing the format of the magazine in subtle ways. Page count has been reduced by using a slightly smaller font, etc.

I think this economic climate makes it tough on everyone. Everyone that is committed to making it through is trying a variety of clever promotions or ways to attract customers.
I love print and even if I don't read a specific publication, I want them to succeed. I doubt any business will admit they are drowning. That's probably smart as prople don't tend to want to get on a sinking boat.

Sure the internet has taken it's toll on the publications...we are in the process of launching our own monthly - albeit quite different from all the others - called The Deceiver. Why? It is still an effective way to advertise and regardless of how many online news sites there are - magicians still like to have something in their hand to read when they want - it sure is difficult to take the laptop into the "library" if you know what I mean

Print publications everywhere are having a hard time (I work in the magazine business as well) so I wouldn't be surprised if Genii and Magic are both taking a hit. There is a younger generation that simply won't buy a magazine. Most magazines are right now trying to figure out a strategy that bridges web and print, and compared to where other industries are, the magic mags are pretty far behind. Genii at least has its forum and its online archives.... Magic has, well, not much. (Actually, correction: they do have Joanie Spina's web/print hybrid column, which is cool.) I'm surprised that both magazines aren't more aggressive in adding web content and finding a way to communicate with their readership on a more frequent basis than once a month.

I'm guessing that no one will be surprised to hear this, given that I do a monthly interview with both Richard Kaufman and Stan Allen in which we get an editors perspective on the publication of each new issue, but I love the print magazines and look forward to getting mine every month! (oh.. and for the record... no.. they do not pay me to do these chats.)

2 excellent magazines. However I fear a diminishing readership typical of all current print media. Perhaps a merger of these 2 great publications would ensure their future?

I have subscriptions with Magic, Genii, M.U.M., Reel Magic, and The Linking Ring. They are all worth the money in my opinion. I'm 23 and plan on staying subscribed into old age. (crossing fingers)
