Hello everybody!!
I would like to include the elevator in my show. Since my family are incredible aluminum workers and have experience building illusions I would like to make it by my self. Can it be done paying the rights to Jim? I'm asking if I can construct it by myself just paying his rights and plans. I don't want another builder to make it for me. Thanks a lot. D |

Hi, I would email Jim, as I think this is licensed to some builders. As far as I know Craig Dickens & EDF can both build this illusion.

Why not ask Jim directly?
http://jimsteinmeyer.com/ I've emailed him before and he does respond pretty quickly. Michael |

I wanted to know your knowledge since I don't want to bother Jim so much.
I actually know that there are some authorized builders. In fact Tim Cloutier is an authorized one. I will contact Mr Steinmeyer. Thanks. D |

It may also depend on which version of "the elevator" you wish to build. There are "other" touches that have been added, some which are proprietery.

When plans are in magic are printed in books, magazines, or plans, there are statements written in the book or article that state whether it is permissible to make and perform the illusions for oneself. Having the rights purchased and granted does not necessarily mean you will get any plans, and having the rights to build the illusion, does not mean you can perform the illusion. And when you are done with the illusion, you will most likely have to destroy it, meaning you will not be able to sell the illusion you built to another person. These are generally separate issues. Your statement implies that you believe Mr. Steinmeyer has plans available. If you have purchased any of his written works, you may note that he does not show any detailed construction of an illusion. He is a wonderful ideas and concept thing person and the details are up to the individual illusion builder. I would take the advice of the other members and contact Mr. Steinmeyer for the details. |

Well, I know all the laws involved in the rights specially the ethics in magic
I recently saw one Tim Cloutier's elevator. A friend of mine purchased it and explained how it worked, some money for Tim's work and some money for Jim's rights... That's OK. The concept of the elevator is a Jim creation... very subjective since, as Silvester the Jester stated in one post, the ideas that can be easily reproducible by any mind with different methods can not be protected by rights (Sorry Sylvester if I didn't understood you and I have put wrong words in your mouth). The discussion was about the separated head illusion. A concept shared by Sylvester, Marvey and others... I don't want to discuss that here and I would like just to pay the rights for the illusion. In fact I know mostly of the different methods involved in the illusion, I'm pretty interested in the old method, you know done with m*****s!! Not the base or others. I think that the method I want was the first concept designed by Steinmeyer and possibly there are plans of it. Don't know. I'm going to contact him and let you know what happened Quote:

He is a recognized metal craftsman specially in the area of gym machines. But for curiosity I took a look and I didn't find the illusion. What I saw was a version of the Copperfield duck. Doesn't has that illusion rights?? That's not the old "where the duck goes" illusion. Thanks D |

Sorry, The mirror images, I saw the Wellington. I didn't recognize it the first time.
In my opinion Tim Cloutier's is more or less the same price and the design is much beautiful. In fact the need of making my own illusions is that all the illusion design that I made shares a grotesque Tim Burton's style making them look alike. Not a super old featured illusion with a high tech crystal casket as I have seen with many magicians. I bet for an homogeneous style. Thanks D |

If you watch any of the original performances by Doug Henning you'll notice that when shown empty the interior of the cabinet is brick-like, and a person walks through it from back to front. After the appearance, the interior of the cabinet has changed from brick to Doug's signature "clouds & rainbows" look. As far as I know, Jim has only licensed this illusion to certain builders, and plans are not available. In addition to the others mentioned above are Bill Smith and Willie Kennedy. |

Every time I see the Copperfield version, I'm reminded of how much an artistic genius he is. In my opinion, his is the pen-ultimate version.

I agree, Lou, but only because of the actual meaning of the word "penultimate".

Understood. Just didn't know there was a unique style you where going after. Here is a thought would it be cheaper to purchase one built and modify the look? Just a thought and saves time from building on from scratch. If not the best thing to do is call the man himself. Great person to talk to and will guide you properly

Anyone notice Henning's elevator has a little overlooked detail that sells the illusions. The background changes from brick to sky when the girl appears.

JVHarrison Regular user 105 Posts |
That detail is often missed. The idea was that when the cabinet was originally shown empty, you were looking at the "elevator shaft" and that not only did Doug arrive, but so did the celestial "elevator car."

Jim personally designs all versions of this effect. The one I built several years back also featured the inside changing-- from a translucent green shaft with cables down the middle to a paneled elevator cab.
